I always liked the old one, but it had some design flaws, and I've had my mind set on an Outback lately anyway. Today I stopped off at a Honda dealership to see one of these in person. It's much better than I thought it would be, and I thought it would be pretty damned nice.

I might just get one. It takes me a while to buy a new car, because I shop the whole market. This thing, though... Haven't test driven it yet, but it's an outstanding vehicle. They really refined everything, and it's a perfect pickup for everyday use. It's certainly not flimsy, either.

Anyone else poked and prodded at one of these things? I must have spent an hour in there fucking with it.

Cheers,

Kennith

I think they are fantastic. They are perfectly designed and engineered for 75% of people who "want and will use" a pickup truck. It drives like an Accord. But even my wife said she wouldn't be caught dead driving or riding in it; and I wouldn't either.

The Ridgeline is bested only by the Chevy Avalanche in ugliness factor.

Honda is just not good in the Utility Truck/SUV area. But, if you're in the market for a sedan Honda should be your first choice. If you want the reliability of the Japan auto Toyota is on the money with their Tundra and so on. But I agree, the Ridgelines look special.

For the vast majority buying a pickup truck for "hauling," the Ridgeline makes perfect sense. It doesn't make sense for any real work.

It doesn't look anywhere as horrendous as it used to. For people who just want to carry stuff but drive a car daily or makes the most sense. If the worst you are going to see is snow on a paved road or wet dirt it is the right truck. You can't argue with 18/25/21 city/highway /combined mpg with regular gas and Honda reliability.

Talking snow, I'll grant you it is better than 2wd only.

However it sucks compared to a real awd system (rover, quattro, 4-matic etc)

It also occurred to me that trucks don't have real awd either.

Toyota calls them multi-mode I think. 2wd, AWD with traction control under 70MPH and 4WD Lo and Hi with locking the center Diff. Pretty neat really.

It's neat; if you call it what it actually is. It's an all-wheel drive traction control system. If you keep it in lock and try to actually work it, you'll overheat the transmission.

I'm amusing your speaking of the Honda's. The Toyota muiti-modes are tanks.

I think it's astute for Honda to offer a "truck" for people who think they need a truck but don't really need a truck. Folks like the visibility, cargo space, and added traction of a truck, but many drivers also dislike the ride quality and fuel consumption of trucks. To offer some of the functionality of a truck with the comforts of a car is clever.

And to be clear, Kenneth is talking about the revised body style Ridgeline. This is the old version:
