It's come time to part with my beloved 98 Discovery. It's sitting at a shop in Cheboygan, MI right now. Details below if you care to read. Short story: being a poor college student, I can't afford a project truck, so it's got to go.

The good:
Tires. 5X BFG M/Ts, 235/85/16. Good condition, about 7-8k on them. Spare has never touched the road.

Auto/TC/diff lock all fully functional.

Interior. Relatively good condition, clean, no major tears in the seats, heater works, radio works, etc. There's a CD changer under the passenger seat. I never monkeyed with that once I noticed the fm transmitter in the dash.

Recently replaced: ignition coils, starter motor, upper and lower radiator hoses, throttle body heater hoses. Also done, but see below: Valley gasket, valve cover gaskets, end seals, thermostat.

The bad:
Engine. As described below, will need to be trailered. ~163k, iirc.

Exterior. While the panels are mostly straight, the previous owner sprayed flat black directly on top of the factory paint. As you can imagine, this is beginning to peel. Makes for a pretty ugly truck. PO also built his own front bumper then proceeded to bend it by pulling some trucks out of the snow. There's also a brush guard that doesn't seem particularly useful. Rear bumper is modified in some way, looks like maybe the ends were cut off. Passenger side headlamp has no mounting posts, it's wired into position.

Interior. Minor details?front passenger window doesn't move, rear sunroof doesn't move. Also the rear (cargo) door doesn't open. A/C doesn't work due to a leak in the hard lines, but the blower works fine.

The story on the engine:
About 300 miles into a 550 mile trip, she overheated and I pulled over. I saw oil and coolant everywhere, couldn't locate the leaks. The local shop tells me they found leaks at the rear main seal, intake gasket (replaced ~1200 miles ago), and thermostat (replaced ~1200 miles ago). They want somewhere in the neighborhood of $1100-1200 to do that work.

I know I could save substantially on the engine work by some diy and having the rest done by my local indy, but getting the truck to Houghton would really eat into that. My uncle gave me a deal on his <50k Blazer, so I just want to cut my losses and get out of the Disco. Asking for $850 obo.

These are the best couple shots I have:

This is the previous owner's photobucket set. I bought the truck at the end of April 2010, so it's recent-ish.

I'm afraid that nobody would take the truck if I sold the tires! XD Cheboygan is about 300 miles to my house and 300 miles the other way to school, so I really don't want to have to haul it in order to part it out. I'm planning on talking to the shop tomorrow or Thursday, so I'll see if we can't work something out to pull the tires.

Too bad it is pretty much way too far for anyone outside of Michigan.

Too bad it is too far away for anyone who lives IN Michigan. Unless you're in the Mackinac City Rover and Fudge Club you live too far away. And Cheboygan is weird. Back in the early/mid nineties when the Michigan Militia was taking off they were all paranoid up there about black helicopters and the United Nations controlling the weather.

Then again, those of us who spent enough time in Ann Arbor developed serious attitude problems about the rest of the state.

Update: I just got off the phone with the shop. He's letting me store it there until spring break (~March 7) then I'll pick it up. Tentatively I think I'll pull some parts then scrap the remainder right there in Cheboygan, but I might suck it up and haul the whole thing downstate.

I'll keep it up for sale as a whole for awhile yet. Send me a pm if you're interested and we might be able to work something out for delivery. I live in 49036.

If it doesn't sell in a couple weeks I'll let you know how I've decided to part it, in which case d1driver has dibs on the tires.

If you are headed towards coldwater, you are gonna go right past my house with it, you can stop and drop it off and leave it there if you want to.... :)
