Studded snows? On a Rover? WTF? Do you wear a condom 24/7 too?

LOL, no "snip-snip" and a clean wifey wins the race! :smilelol:

Proper tires for the right terrain is the right way to run...... we all know that. Would you venture around in the wildness of Moab with undersized high performance summer tread on 20 inch wheels? :bigok:

Hankooks now have a beautifull M/T, the Dynapro M/T. And if I remember correctly, they have very decent prices.

maxxis is bigger than hercules, partially siped and drilled for studs and ceaper, the new bfg is $189

What do you mean "bigger"?

I just got a new set of 5 of the Hercules Trail Diggers in 285/75/16 size and I paid less than you did for the Maxxis. These are also partially siped and drilled for #15 studs.

Russ,

bigger is better, yes?
okay, all joking aside,

I meant bigger as in its been easier for me to find a Maxxis supplier to get replacements (discount tire/les scwab etc)whereas finding a hercules dealer can be a bit more of a challenge, http://www.herculestire.com/locatorHercules/wa.htm suggested there are no dealers in WA, and some other states too

I considered the hercules, as I know you have had only good experience with them, but feel the maxxis is a great price vs perfomance point, not as much money as the bfgs which seem overpriced. NOw that I own them, I like the MAXXIS better than BFG myself.

Does hercules make as many sizes as BFG and MAXXIS? my quick search did not find them to make as many sizes:http://www.herculestire.com/catalogHercules/pdfCatalogPages/pg19_TrailDiggerMT-TerraTracMT.pdf

No I am not involved with them or anything but i have ordered from them several times in years past. I had forgotten about them so i just called.

4 @ 255-85-16 delivered to my door for under $460!!!!!! Choice of Dean (Cooper) "Mud Terrain" and/or Jetson (Also Cooper) "Trailcutter RT" (I have them on my plow truck - had forgotten!) I am going with the Trailcutters as they have been very good on the plow truck on all terrain other than a little tread noise as expected - still less than a BFG mud or similar.

Trailcutters:

Nebraska tire has a lot more selection in other sizes and have always been VERY helpful on the phone and ship quickly and cheaply for what it's worth.

That's cool. It was just a strange non-sequitur and made little sense.

The way I found a place to purchase Hercules from was to call the corporate office. They located a supplier in ME who delivers all over New England and gave me their number. I saved on shipping by meeting the delivery driver on his way to all the tire shops in the area. Therefore my shipping costs was my fuel to drive 5 minutes out of town to meet the guy.

Otherwise the website for Hercules isn't reliable to find a local vendor. If anyone is interested, just call the corporate office.

X2 on the Hankook!!!! I Love them!! they have an awesome sidewall tread and have got me through alot of mixed terrain. I got 4 mounted and balanced with tax for 600. although mine are 265/75/16. The pic in the websites dont do them justice. they are just as good looking as they are gripping!! Good luck!

No, I just don't believe in studs. Stopped using them years ago. They tear the hell out of the roads, and don't provide better traction than good siped studless snow tires. On the Rover I just run MT's, they work fine in snow and ice with ABS.

I actually agree with you 150% on the stud issue.... I had these "new" tires left from a previous truck so i used them. Nokian Hakka's.

I do not however agree about the muds..... abs is nice but you'll still slide a LOT farther than with a good siped snow - but I know you understand this. :victory:

My Nokians will be for sale next fall here in Maine as i will be in Moab, Grand Junction and Cali all winter with the truck.

I'm running the 245/65r16s muds from hi-tec retread and after running them for 12k+ and no rotations they are still holding up good. Mich sidewalls came dried out though and cracked but haven't lost any air pressure over it. I'd tell them you want a good set of sidewalls so they wont do to u what they did to me. there holding up good though.

seeing as we're digressing from cheap to ANY tires i'd pit the mickey thompson mtzs against bfgs (having had mud and all terrains previously)
+quieter than mud terrains
= for traction,maybe a bit less aggressive
+as cheap as bfg's for 5 atleast in Australia the were.
+heaps more side traction for rutted sections
+wear is excellent,less than 2mm off tread in 12,000kms
just a suggestion.... take it or leave it,i'm not getting into a tire debate, cos i don't really care what you get.
