We were following what we thought to be an intermediate trail as marked on the MAR topo map when we happened upon these gentlemen. In retrospect, we might have been following an elevation contour line since they were indicated with the same color. We decided to avoid this spring-sucking mudhole and to get stuck in several other locations that did not require re-installing springs.

Shortly after JohnK discovered the spring in the mud, this gentleman's friend in the Red Rover discovered he needed to put his spring back in position too! Bill Burke would have been proud to see their use of the Hi-lift jack to re-install the spring so they could continue the original recovery.

BTW, this guy lost his spring using the bypass while the Red Rover was stuck in the primary mud hole.

Made it home about an hour ago without incident. Just got tired to being ankle deep in mud or water, or both. Of course, it stopped raining once we left the rally site, but then poured down rain most of the way home. Oh well, other then a few cases of stupid people it was a fun event. I ran all the trails Thursday night in 3 hours. Tried to run them Friday morning, got half of them in 6 hours. I didnt get stuck, it was the people in front of me, or people in my group, and I was the only one with a winch. Oh well. The old 8274 saved the day again. Cheers.

Soggy is an understatment. I have never seen so much rain fall. Glad to be dry at last. Glad we got those trails in the first night Adam. Still had fun in the muck though. Hope those of you who stuck it out today had fun.

Two solid months of drought and we've been getting rain for the past two days. We haven't gotten nearly 8-10 inches here in So. MD, probably more like 2-3 inches. Kept wondering where all the rain was given the entire state (except our county!) was under a flood warning. Guess it was in Ol' Virginny, eh? Hope y'all had a good time.

I had an AWESOME time! Even with the shitty weather, it was still fun.

I got to meet a ton of people from Dweb, camped out with Axle, and the group cooked up some crazy good food.

I packed up Saturday morning, wet, but did not leave till 8PM. The auction turned out to be a bargin bin!! I got a cargo area full of extra parts now, including a transmission and transfer case, for 160.00 total!!!

Trails were too easy on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, but by Friday, the bunny trails were tough. Only carnage was a lost bead on the West River Ford, of all places (how do you loose a bead in sand??)...

Looking forward to next year!!

Lost a Wheel

I just wanted to add that I have made it safe and sound back home after having my rig hauled to Rovertym for near term repairs and finding a rental car company that was actually open in Richmond! Cheers to Drew, Steve and a couple other gentleman (sorry my memory) that assisted me and my three wheeled truck. I snapped one of my front axles on the trail and the above guys "band-aided" it to get it back to camp (with special thanks to Drew.) ....if anyone happened to get a pic of the silver three wheeler...please post it.

As the story goes....

hitting the trails early Thursday afternoon, I got stuck a few times and winched out twice (the trail coming down off the Island where there where two immediate short, steep grades) ...coming back, I attempted the first steep grade twice then hitting it hard....launching all four wheels off the ground and the supposed strapped tire on top coming loose. (I thought it had fallen off and killed my friend who was outside watching....memories came back of a red rover previously owned;-)

Later that night after insuring the rack lights were functional (ha! only three by the way...) We hit the trails again. Upon hitting the decent before the East River Trail by-pass, I notice I only had rear traction with the CDL locked around the not-so-hairy-at-the-time switchback. Taking the left trail option which was easy, I heard a loud gut-wrenching i pitched sound......the same I heard when toasting my fron CV's the first time and kept going for a few feet...noticing that something was wrong. I stopped and got out looking at the front passenger wheel.....going holy sh*t!!!! ...then meeting up with my friend at the rear where he questions........"Is that your wheel??"

Damn! ...and $$$$$

btw.....the XZL's will be retired and I WILL return to MAR next year, this time likley towing my rig in anticipation of potential "issues". The speculation is still just that but I am sure the tires have contributed greatly.....

All in all I had a great time wheeling with others as a passenger after the sob story;-)

MAR 2006!!!

It was good meeting everyone.. the rain wasn't fun, especially when it gets into the tent! Thanks to all the guys from Philly Rovers for welcoming us up to their party!

Definitely going back next year, bringing bigger tents though! (And maybe a raincoat)

Any count on tent losses (little bit of wind Thurs night and HEAVY RAIN) Mine bit the dust at 4am the first night! I am lucky to have good friends who allowed me into their Pop-up.

I think I will have one of those next year! It was REALLY Nice (and Dry!)

What a blast. I have been going to the MAR since 98 and I have never seen it rain so much for so long. Everyone seemed to take it in stride and respect the challenges mother nature laid out. Lots of good times around camp and on the trails. No damage for me this time around except the tent :D

Until next time!

well, my 95 decided to call it quits Friday morning heading south on 29. stuck on the side of the road, pouring rain, with my buddies in my 2000 DII behind me. finally get a tow truck to get us after about 3 hours. had it towed to my parent's place at Lake Anna near Louisa, VA. Decided it has already been too long a day and spend the night and break out all the beer and drown my sorrows at the lake house. get up and repack the two trucks so we have room for 5 of us in the DII and head over to MAR around 1pm Sat. Trucks are just filing out past us heading the other directions, covered in mud. i decide we are just going to drive the truck in, meet some friends, hang out for the day, cook up some grub, then head back to the lake. watched from the top of the hill as trucks were slipping down the hill backwards/sideways/whichever ways, getting stuck all over the place, yahoos doing donuts, a series truck trying to push a rangie up the steep hill near the rally tents (anyone else see this? some of the most dangerous shit i've ever seen) and just bullshitted with friends. left out of there around 7pm in my stock dii, proceeded to get my ass stuck, finally get out with some skinny pedal and head back to the lake for a nice dry bed. hopefully everyone had fun and was safe, it was definitely a mess to look at, and that was just the main rally site. can't imagine what some of the trails were like.

Me and the family went back and forth to the island on Sat morning about 4x over the course of an hour. In that time, the water rose from a few inches over the causeway, to close to 1ft over the causeway, and it was getting to the point that you couldn't see it breaking on the other side. I'm glad you guys got off there when you did.

On the 7am 'sunrise trailride' this morning (Sunday), we did the log bridge trail which passes by the causeway, and that water was pretty damn high.

I brought my RV, so at least we stayed dry. We were in the RV that was parked facing the exit... so I didn't have to do any crazy maneuvering in the mud this morning to get out, like some of the other RV's did. :)

Can't wait till next year!!!

Yea MAR was a blast dry and wet. I got there early Thursday evening and got to ride a good amount of the trails. As for Friday and Saturday it was a pure sh*t show. Mud and rain everywhere...it made things better, it was too dry Thursday thus no challenge. I was also camped out on the island to the right and thank god I left earlier Saturday because from what I heard you guys had a field day getting across the causeway....either way it was a great weekend and can't wait till next year!! I took a ton of pictures, I just don't know where I should post them?
