Ironman 4x4 Buyer Beware

Took a look at the fridge today. Problem is obvious. It's also obvious someone else has been in the fridge, too. I could tell by the screws. The screws had been removed prior to me taking them out. I could tell because in behind the panel dirt had been wiped clean and the screws were loose.

The problem is a cut copper line. I say cut because it's cut clean. It's not ripped or otherwise damaged. Copper being soft I doubt it can be sheered clean like this from something like an impact. It also does not appear to be a seam that failed. So it looks to have been cut to me. It's also a bit shiny around the cut like something had been in contact with it, much like a tubing cutter. I have never had the cover off before now.

I plugged the fridge in to see if it still comes on. It does. The compressor runs. There is a new noise however. It sounds like someone blowing through a straw. The noise is coming from the cut line. This noise was not present when I shipped the fridge out. It's a new noise.

Come to your own conclusions.

I'm going to attempt to fix this myself.

The fridge was shipped back to me in plastic wrap. There does not appear to be any "new" damage to the fridge that Ironman did not report and photograph.

looks like they may have stated to fix it and then changed their mind…most hvac guys run nitrogen thru the line as they are brazing it to keep contamination down. Looks like a easy fix but is there a way to charge the system once repaired

Kenny getting ready to package something for shipping.

Maybe so, but at least the stuff I ship is sure to be safe; and it doesn't cost me much more to get it right, nor does it take much longer.

I just shipped a box to California today. It cost me about ten dollars for the postage (Priority 2-Day), and a further two dollars (very roughly) for the packaging materials. The package was, I believe, ten inches by nine inches by five inches.

The contents brought $2,800; and were somewhat delicate. I'm sure it will be fine on the way, regardless of how many stairs that box is kicked down.

I've got something much larger and more troublesome to ship reasonably soon. If I remember, I'll take pictures.

Cheers,

Kennith

Your a silly girl. Like Amy Winehouse.

I don't know, man... It's hard to tell the sizes of the stuff there, but paint is suspiciously absent in that one particular spot. If you were to imagine sliding one pipe into another about a centimeter, you'd line that paint right up.

It could be a slipped or broken braze joint. That could be an adapter where it appears to have been cut. The two can look very similar. You'd have to get a really, really close look into the side attached to the compressor.

Cheers,

That is really really fucked up. So I bet the guy thought about what was done to your fridge and decided he better get it back before you opened it and saw that. Or they had begun to replace the compressor and decided to go ahead and break it off in Dan's ass instead? Either way that line was cut.

I knew there was a shit storm brewing here.

All we've got is a picture of a line that looks cut.

Assuming it was indeed cut, we don't know why, or why it was left that way. We don't even know who cut it.

That said, there are only a few possibilities.

Well its pretty much all you need for this.. the fridge was working up until it stopped effectively cooling, warranty claim placed and unit shipped. Unit returns and the line is not connected to where its supposed to be. Its doesn't really matter the who or why other than it didn't leave here in that condition, and there's clear evidence that since it left here and its return, that someone had opened it up and messed with it and now has MORE issues than what it left with.

While it definitely does look like a clean cut, I would say that if the line had been cut recently, the area inside/on the cut would be brighter copper, rather than caked with the same filth that plagues the rest of that enclosure.
