dang nabbit, i hate it when my mud tires dont let me drive over the speed limit. and who knew tires with huge tread voids would be loud? thats a new development for sure.

Wait.....what!??? Next your going to tell me they suck on hardpack snow/ice. What are mud tires even good for, anyway?

Two sets is enough when I plan on going somewhere. One for everyday use, and another specifically chosen for the job.

To reference another post, I am indeed bitching about the MTRKs, and I'll continue.

I had them up to speed today, driving west a bit to pick up some interior bits for the DII. HOLY SHIT!

These things are fucking loud as hell. Add that to my complaints.

Add as well that they have affected my top speed dramatically. I was struggling to reach 85 in a vehicle that previously topped out at 100, and comfortably cruised in the low 90s.

I've used a number of mud tires, but these are fucking intolerable.

Cheers,

Kennith

I'm calling bullshit. Even my D1 would break 100mph with the same tires. There are some videos floating around... And the road noise with those tires is no greater than any other MT tire...until you get 30k or 40k miles on them.

I think my truck would implode at 100 mph. it feels like a fucking nasa shuttle getting ready to launch at about 80.

That's probably 99% of the trucks on Dweb - trucks that are not set-up correctly.

i agree with this, since a common thought tossed around jeep forums was, "its lifted and axle swapped, it cant go over 55mph." i felt safe up to the speed limiter of 120 something in my 93 XJ, but never put my 98 over 100 bc i was geared lower and the motor didnt like being above 4500RPM that long trying to break a 2.5 ton brick through the wind.

all thats done to my disco is a set of 245s and it struggles with power once i get to 90. steering, brakes, etc all feel fine.

No, I'm completely serious here.

I was hoping you'd check back in and mention whether or not you'd experienced the same thing.

I shit you not, these are by far the loudest mud tires I've run, and all my other notes are accurate. They are terrible. I'd have offered them for sale here, but there's no way I'm doing that to someone; especially at this price point.

My last tires were run for years with no trim behind the front seats and minimal sound deadening. It was quite loud, but didn't really bother me too much. Shortly after fitting these, I hit the trouble areas with Dynamat, sealed the edges, and reinstalled the rear carpet.

These damned tires are louder than the others, even with all the insulation.

None of my performance complaints have applied to any other tire I've run. Admittedly, I've got these under a microscope now, but the issues are there.

Something just ain't right with these. I have seen a few quotes before, illustrating that Goodyear may have dropped the ball later on in production; suggesting the the first few runs were superior.

I didn't give it much thought at that point, but now I'm beginning to wonder if those people were indeed correct.

This is a different kind of loud, man. It's outlandish.

Please tell us what these other tires were. Comparing something to nothing is pointless.

Is FUCKING LOUD not enough for you?

The noise comparison is related to a set of KM1s. They were fitted when the vehicle was a tin can, and the noise wasn't overly annoying, even on long trips.

Now it's got some insulation, with special attention paid to the wheel wells, and the MTRKs are still much, much louder.

I realize KM1s weren't the loudest tire in the world, but I'm also considering experiences with more aggressive products from manufacturers such as Interco and Michelin.

It helps to state what your baseline is for comparison. Your "fucking loud" may be not be that loud to someone else. But if you say the MTRK is considerably louder than your KM1's then that at least gives others a way to compare that isn't totally subjective.
What offerings from Interco and Michelin have you had and in what sizes?

I run Cooper STTs. Bought them used, they balanced out with no more than 6oz. They are quite, pretty smooth, and I run 70 no problem. I don't much care to run any faster really. That being said my next set of tires will be chosen for off road ablility. I could give a fuck less if they are loud.

I know all that. This isn't a tire comparison. It's just a bunch of observations and complaints.

The damned things just aren't performing even remotely as expected of a tire that's not meant for dedicated trail use or competitions. Something's clearly not right. If all of these were this bad, Dan would have been livid after owning them.

I sent Goodyear a request for a refund or exchange.

Interco:

I've got a few miles of stick time behind most of their offerings, but mostly Super Swampers and those dumb-ass Thornbirds. Most enthusiasts I know use Interco tires. I've bought and sold a few cars fitted with their tires, as well.

Either way, I've used them enough to know how they handle and perform.

Michelin:

I've got a lot of time riding on XML and XZL tires in pretty much every fucking size available. I've also owned and driven a number of their consumer-oriented tires, including their classic off-pavement lines that I think were mentioned earlier.

I just bought a set of 255-85-16 Maxxis bighorns.

Dumb ass name but they seem to have great reviews and I recall when I lived in New Zealand they were very common and very popular.

I was all set to buy these GY from Kennith but after all this I decided to pass. Plus I really wanted a 255-85 anyway and those have limited availability.

I will post how I feel about the BigHornies later. Ha ha.

I've heard excellent reviews of the GY - seems like you got a bad batch or the quality has really slipped. Either way it's too bad.

Doug

I think Kennith just has different standards. I don't know about their mud tires, but I think Goodyear and Pirelli make some of the worst most expensive tires.

the STT/MTZ/toyo MT triplets are outstanding tires. without a doubt, the best aggressive radials available today in my opinion; and in that order. i think the MTRK falls somewhere in the middle of that but...

i've seen mixed. i know some people who have them and love them, and some who have them, and hated them. some got 20k miles before they were bald, some 40k... and this is only with similarly spec'd varieties of a daimler/chrysler vehicle you guys enjoy me talking about so much. they seem pretty inconsistently made.

In all seriousness try some maxxis trepador radials.

If for some reason I couldn't get another set of tsl's I would get bias trepadors.

I'll see if my life partner can chime in on trepadors.
