All right. I know this has been discussed a few times here. On the Land Cruiser forums (www.ih8mud.com), there has always been a hate (?) for all things Land Rover... for example... if you have registered...

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=52944

if not...

"All I can say is that anything made by a Brit is a POS. Yeah yeah the Discovery Series is pretty tuff on tht trail but it doesn't come close to a FZJ80. Then you have the Range which is right in line with comfort but again can't compaire on the trail. Bottom line, neither the Range or Disco have lockers and I'd never put my trust in the Rovers. When I'm 100+ miles from the nearest help, never will I want to be in a Rover."

or...

"Consumer reports consistantly ranks Land Rover as the least reliable vehicles on the market. Toyota and subsidiaries are consistantly ranked most reliable, and the LC is always praised for reliability.

Land Rover would be lucky if their products become as reliable as a Ford.

Ford would be lucky if their products become as reliable as Toyotas

Regardless of a Rovers offroad prowess, reliability is my #1 priority, so it is Toyota for me."

What do you guys have to say?

Toyota makes a good truck, that's a fact. But, they come with their share of problems too, like every other vehicle made.

To say the fzfj-80 is better on the trail, he is right, stock vs. stock...A disco is not going to run with many trucks out there with stock lockers. But, add lockers to the disco, and a little larger tire, and I would take the Disco any day over a fj-80.

In the end, you may have more mney wrapped up in a Land Rover vs. a Cruiser for a truck that see's the trail. But, the disco kicks the cruisers ass on diffucult trails.

The cruiser is even more bulky than the disco, and weighs more.

You get a better ride from a LR too.

Toyota makes some nice stuff, but apples to apples, the LR is a better vehicle, IMO. Ever see a Land Cruiser in the Camel Trophy?

I'd say what is your point for posting that other then to troll?? Really if you want to believe what all the so called "car guys" write then by all means listen to them and run from a Land Rover.

I guess we all would be driving the TLC or some Toyota if it was based off of some Consumer Report type publisher then. But everyone has different tastes and beliefs and therefore I am glad we have choices like the one you mention. Why I like my Rover should only matter to me but of the Discovery's that I have or had, I have found them to great vehicles and reliable and never have I been stranded as you say and that is why i continue to drive them.

In the end, they are just machines and they all require maintenance and with the proper maintenance any vehicle will last for a longtime regardless of the make.

I just like to add that Toyota looks like it is just like Land Rover in the sense that they making the LC a glorified mall cruiser as well so....

Do this: Go to Moab. Try some of the medium or harder trails. Poison Spider/Golden Crack/GBR or Steelbender come to mind. Stop for a couple of hours to eat lunch. See what vehicles you see pass you.

You will see a ton of Jeeps. Makes sense too. Easy and cheap to modify and very capable mods available. The next most common vehicle you will see are LR's. Mostly Discos and Rangie Classics. Why? Because they are simple, and for the most part, easy to modify, and actually quite reliable in thier own environment.

I have always liked Toyotas, but you can count on one thing: if an owner of a brand feels they have to knock THE most established off-road vehicle in the world, you can rest assured they know they would get thier butt kicked on the trail.

Happy Web-wheelin'

Beat me to it.

I have never seen a (new school) LC on any trail in Colorado.

Even on non-club trips, I see plenty of Rovers from stock to macked.

So the 4-wheeling community votes with their pocketbooks. I have nothing against Crusiers, just my observation.

I think you missunderstood my original post. My intention was to show the Land Rover community what "others" think and just start a conversation about it. I'm not choosing any sides here. As for me, I'm a Land Cruiser owner. Do I hate Land Rovers? No! My dad has owned his Discovery for a couple of years now and has never had any problems with it. I like them both very much...

Cruiser is a nice vehicle too, people that "HATE" other brands need to graduate highschool and grow up. Jeepers seem to be the worst about this, I don't care what you drive, just be responsible wheelers. I secretly lust for a GWagen.

So the guy in the LR was a shitty driver...so what? I doubt he lost traction on the ascent and just spun two wheels. Passenger probably wanted to stop for a pic, driver was too stupid to say no way, and then his buddies razzed him by driving the slope straight thru. My Tacoma was a fine little truck...but I never understood people whos enthusiasm for a brand was based only on knocking another. This Ford vs Chevy logic is for NASCAR rednecks.

Edited videos on the web are just that...edited videos.

from the girl who posted the question on the cruiser site..."What are lockers?"

;) LOL

What good are "reliability reports" anyway? My 2002 Toyota was a problematic P.O.S. that I sold after a year. You could kinda dance to the beat of the Check Engine Lamp popping on and off.
My 95 Discovery has 105K on it and has NEVER broken down.

Consumer reports combines ALL defects together as a 'point.' Land Rovers, still being built by people and a little more 'old school' are a bit more primitive and more prone to human error as well as some traditional British lack of quality control. A bad wiper motor on a Land Rover gets a point against it in "reliability" just the same as an engine bursting into flames in a Toyota gets a point against it.

In the big scheme of things, Land Rovers may have little quirks that beat it down in statistics- but they have a SOUL. A transportation appliance from Japan has no soul.

I can fix my Rover on the trail- and I have. Open the hood of a Toyota and WTF?

Just wanted to say.....
I read that entire thread and watched that stupid video of the Death Valley Cruiser trip. The Disco (which they called a RR) that didn't make the hill was one of the model years without the diff lock....BIG Difference between those Cruisers with lockers. Just not a fair comparison...not to mention the fact they called it both a Range Rover and a Defender.

I like Cruisers...would own one in addition to my Rovers....but I don't like cookie-cutter vehicles. All Toyotas look the same and feel the same. They have no soul. Some might think soul=character or 'quirkiness'....so be it. I'll take a British (or German) car over a Japanese one anyday!

Added:
I've had Mercedes (2 that were mine, 3 others in the family) that ran for 150K before they had problems. We've had Cadillacs, Jaguars, BMWs....etc. My Disco is approaching 100K and the only thing that has been fixed/replaced was the starter that I SOAKED with mud at MAR....even then...it took two months to die after the cruel treatment. Our RRC has 160K on it and it runs beautifully. My brother-in-law had a toyota that was JUNK. Cars are cars...some good...some bad. Some good DRIVERS...some bad.

I totally agree, although my '96 Infiniti I30 is the best daily driver I have ever had. Runs like new after almost 10 years. Definitely doesn't have the character of my Rover though. That's why the rover gets to sleep inside with the Mastercraft while the Infiniti and my girlfriend's Hyundai get the driveway. :D

To me its personal preference. My brother has an fj80 with the factory lockers and a 6" lift. The thing is incredible of road. But for reliablity it is hit or miss. He had to have his engine rebuilt at 80k.

Who cares what others think. If you like your rig and enjoy wheelin in it go for it. I could care less what some cruiser guy thinks. Whats he going to do. I don't knock his rig so he should keep his trap shut about mine, period!!!!
