That movie was awesome. The 70% thing is amazing... I think the US brings it down. ;)

About a year ago I bought "my" first car. I had the opportunity to get any vehicle that I wanted for my first car.

What did I look at? That's right, Land Rovers, that I had been wanting since I was 8 years old. Land Cruisers are nice, but I'm not obsessed/infatuated with them. I thought about an 80s Land Cruiser, but after actually test driving a 1985 Defender w/ the 2.5 diesel and the 1998 Discovery I that I ended up buying, I knew that I would never consider any vehicle other than a Land Rover. I love everything about them. I don't really care about the stock vs. stock offroad or any of that because I wasn't planning on leaving it stock.

I don't mind any makes of trucks that I see ever, I like them all because they offroad, but I prefer Land Rover and don't care if something may be better, this is what I want.

thought I'd start by saying I wheel with a LC on 33's w/the dual lockers and a Lexas 450 w/the lockers as well on 35's all the time.

both guys are great friends and we all get along like brothers reguardless of what we happen to own at the time.

to compare the two trucks LC vs LR discovery I have to say they are very similar in there abilities. my D1 is open front and rear with only a few improvements from stock that gain me clearence. wheeling side by side I go everywhere they go . and in snow I can go places they cant. The cruisers added weight and size over the D1 really give the LR an advantage. The cruisers need to stop and realign on the same trails more often then the Disco.

Another huge advantage the disco has is its flat sides. I have found we spend alot of time working the LC's off and away from trees . they have a tendency to slide sideways on off camber spots so a tree will be snug against the slider and right in front of the rear bubbled out fender. this is a bummer and often makes for some hard manual recovery because you need to get multiple guys on the side to push the body clear as the truck progresses forward.

the lc's are very stout trucks and really dont have any huge problems that I have seen. I think they are pretty cool . I have chossen to own Rovers though and I believe that they are everybit as nice as the LC's if not better for the reasons I have posted above.

What do you guys have to say?

The Corolla was supposed to be one of the most reliable cars in the world, but the 1998 we had was in the shop over 20 separate times in the first 3 months. Even the great 'Yota has trouble getting it right sometimes. Then we also had a 95 Tercel that ran like a tank. I've had 3 Discovery IIs and nothing went wrong with them I didn't know were possible issues, and I find that strangly reassuring.

But since you asked, here are some reasons I prefer the Land Rover to any Cruiser that could have come with body-colored running boards:

1. The Cruiser looks like a giant tennis shoe. I fucking hate tennis shoes. I don't wear them, so I sure as hell don't want to drive one. I'm picturing a white Cruiser with molded-on white running boards. Just put a damn Nike logo on the door and be done with it.

2. Two words: Gold Package.

3. SUV Suppository Styling Trend. I hold the Land Cruiser personally responsible for inspiring such SUVs as the Lexus RX and VW Touareg. Hold on, I think I just vomited in my mouth.

4. I can't look at a Cruiser and get inspired to go offroading. They do great offroad, they just don't look like they should.

"When Johnny gets home from college his parents are going to be pissed that he maxed out their credit cards and jacked up their SUV."

5. Rover is a better name. I want to Discover. I want to Rove. I want to Defend. I don't want to Cruise. If I wanted to cruise, I'd buy this:

The FJ40 is another story.

Sweet. Still, I'd rather have a Defender.

Not a Toyota thing - but when you talk about reliability and cost of repair - So far the worst I've come across is the BMW X5. One of the developers in my team bought one new three years ago - now after 120,000 miles (yikes) - It has cost her something along the lines of $16k in repairs and parts.

Compare that with the 110,000 I have on my Disco and less than $2k in repairs over its life. I'm thinkng that the Disco is doing pretty damn good.

She's trading in the Teutonic terror this year...........for a Murano :(

You take the toyota axles, and the toyota guys replace it with Dynatrack :D

Stock for stock, the toyota Birfield is just as weak as the LR CV...So, you need to replace it anyway (Long field, Marfields, New Field, etc...) Or, the rover (Rovertracks, GBR, CV Unlimited..)

Stock for Stock, the toyota diff's are stronger. But, you have got to make them fit the rover housing. So, it does not matter it it's a toyota diff, D-44 diff, 9", ARB, Trutrack, etc... The toyota is a popular choice because the E-locker is so cheap, and it allows you to run a 30 spline axle, and bigger in diameter.

Stock for stock, the rover rear end is a joke compared to the toyota rear end (Unless it's a Salisbury). Toyota did make a badass rear end...Stock, it just won't fit a rover :(

So, I don't think the Toyota front running gear is any better than the Rover stuff, stock for stock. It's just Bobby Long has made a nice business of super strong parts, and a realistic price, that makes the toyota swap attractive. Really, your not putting in anything "Toyota" in your truck, except for the low cost e-locker....Which, since your getting custom axles anyway, you may as well use an ARB...Your just limited with gearing then.

I saw this thing not too long ago....

DSCF0075copy.jpg

So I HAD to turn around and take another pic...

DSCF0077copy.jpg

The owner of that must be REALLY confident that he can make it over and through anything, since I dont see a winch.

Anyway, looks Trail Worthy, doesn't it? :D

If you are talking about pre-91 (40 - 62 series) Cruisers, you are correct on the birfields. They are roughly the exact same as ones found on Non-HD rovers.

Starting in 91 (80 series), however, the cruiser's birfields close to doubled in area. See attached pic, with older birf on left, newer on right.

80 series axles are 33 spline, whereas Discos are 1.25"/24 spline.
Sorry, don't know the specific diameter of the 80 series axles, but, suffice to say, they are probably around 1.5" or so.

I've also attached a couple of pictures of Venezuelan expedition rigs.

As far as heritage goes, that's pretty much a more ambiguous argument to make. For years, Rovers have been the single most ubiquitous vehicle in the African continent, but Cruisers have been making inroads (no pun intended) over the last couple of decades. For every picture you can show of a 109 in Africa, I can find one of a FJ45 on the same Plain.

The current issue, however, is that most African mechanics, specifically ones in more desolate locations, only carry parts to repair Rovers, causing a Cruiser expeditionist to be a little more self-sufficient.

figures they would edit dan rather in reporting on that stunt, he can't get anything right. It's clearly a left-wing propaganda tool to encourage us that LC's are better than LR's. I myself stick to fox news, and leave it upto a steady supply of real facts before I make any judgement.

p.s. - i hope you know i don't really think that's a real broadcast by ol' danny boy. oh ya, i think we should follow in WV's footsteps and claim english as the state language, in every state. No more struggling with employee's at taco-bell, wal-mart, or any places that i might goto.
