I have yet to see a new Land Cruiser in person. Thought I saw one this morning but it was another GX. I know the LC is the same platform as the GX but I can't get past my mental block thinking that it is the size of a Suzuki Samurai. I need to see it in person.

It most definitely wasn't. Think of an FJ with extra set of doors.

I must admit, the look is growing on me. Especially watching the little bits of LR4 exterior plastic disintegrate in 1.5 years (granted it's 8 years old).

The LC just wouldn't work for me with the engine and tow capacity. Lexus looks awesome. Hope you have fun with it @Blue

I've been enjoying the GX. Bought a few extras the other day and they will be installed in a bit less than a month. Stay tuned.

Stopped by to visit the old LR4 the other day - dropped off all the maintenance files and picked up my old license plate. The guy fixed the stereo! Turned out it was indeed a bad satellite module - the only component I didn't trouble-shoot or buy a duplicate version of. I supplied him with the directions to find the satellite module behind the passenger-side cargo panel and I also supplied him a jumper cable to bypass it. All this knowledge came to me from DiscoWeb in the tech forum - I just didn't have the time to mess with it. The LR4 looks small now.

I just scored a GX550! Picking it up tomorrow.

Oh man, what a hassle haggling with the sales chick. The truck included $3389 in installed packages & accessories (including moon roof delete). More shit than I would have added but some of it is useful (rock sliders, heads-up display, cooler box, trailer hitch, roof rack cross bars, rubber cargo mat) even though it's all overpriced. So the truck is sitting at $72,639 with options and including $1350 delivery. And it's on the lot, not in production, not on a boat, not on a truck.

I say let's do it and she emails all the paperwork over and lo and behold there on page 5 is $12,097 in dealer "accessories". Twelve fucking thousand extra. Of course it was too good to be true. Complete Clear Shield Package $6899 (PPF on front bumper, a bit on the hood and front fenders, and side mirrors). Tint/Nitro $1599 (tinted windows). Automate $3599 (exterior paint protection ceramic coating and interior protection like scotch guard - 10 more applications every 6 months). I emailed back with "You had me at Hello but lost me at $12,100 in dealer bullshit." We finally settled on $4250 for all the dealer bullshit but I get the next 10 applications of the ceramic coating and interior scotch guard bullshit along with a full detail each time. They came down nearly $8k on all that bullshit. Sure as hell is a profit center.

More than I wanted to spend but I'm looking at August for the next batch of available GXs to arrive and who knows what Overtrails will be included, if any. I'm also now at the point of renting trucks each week for work and that's going to push $2000 by end of July. Taking my Ford F150 Sport back to Budget tomorrow and then picking up the GX.

Do you think my repairs and maintenance bill will average $10,000 per year like my LR4?
Good on you for not biting that, especially after your first dealer's debacle. New Toyotas are like new Fords, the dealers still think they can get away with that. Also glad to hear you like it. I've bought two new cars (SRT Charger and Ford Raptor) without driving one and bot times worried about buyer's remorse.

Not to Jinx myself, but I've spent less than $1500 in maintenance in three years on my LR4. How in the hell were you spending $10K yr on the LR4? Control arms, guides, and hoses ever year? Your mechanic will miss you. Supposedly Toyota has the kinks worked out of the new V6, so that shouldn't be a problem. The GX will very likely meet expectations.

The only vehicle I've driven with that engine is the new Tundra and it was a let down. Maybe the GX's weight helps. Can't wait to race one though to see if they're as peppy as advertised. On paper the GX is supposedly a little faster, but I don't think the 7.5 to 60 is accurate for the LR4. LR3s are glacial and rated around 7.8. In real world joyrides my LR4 decimated a GX460, but at best hangs on the back door of a 6.2 Yukon AT4 from a stop.

I'm surprised to hear the GX rides better than the LR4. I only kept the LR4 when I bought my Raptor because the LR4 drove better. If Lexus beat the LR4 on ride quality in a body on frame vehicle that's a big leap from their previous platform. I'm equally surprised to hear the interior comparison. I like nice interios and found the LR4 to be nicer than pretty much any new luxury SUV I have looked at under 100K. The Yukon AT4 is a plastic nightmare, and the Seqoia wasn't far behind. Maybe I'm looking at it through the lens of knowing mine cost me $25K whereas anything comparable is 3-4X as expensive though. Most passengers in mine think its a few years old.

I enjoyed the LR4 interior except for all the cheap plastic silver rings around all the vents and knobs. The sun glinting off the glove box latch and parking brake latch drove me nuts. I had black electrical tape on the glove box latch to prevent the glint. The rings around the vents pop off in your hand and the little slats in the vents are constantly falling out (there's one missing in the round vent above the start/stop button in my photo). I had to replace the start/stop button because of course the black and white paint wore off. All the other silver trim pieces are cheap junk too. If you every take your dash apart...for instance, to fix the junk audio/infotainment system when it craps out....you'll see how cheap all these pieces really are. Clips breaking left and right. I had planned to take all the silver pieces and paint them flat black but alas I sold it before it came to that. I did like the steering wheel and the fixed tach and speedo though. The digital info screen in between is straight outta the 90s. The touch screen is straight outta a rental car. Seats were great, doors slam like a bank vault, build quality was good, dials and controls always worked, except the Harmon Kardon uber-fancy ultra stereo system that shit the bed when my battery died. Turns out is was just a bad satellite module but I wasn't paying the dealer their quoted $5,000+ to fix that shit.

The GX interior is simple and, to be honest, not quite becoming of a $70k+ vehicle. I can see why lots of people talk smack about it not being luxury. I like the simple, black, right-angle design. I can't stand all the old school Lexus beige leather and chrome or gold accents, curves, and super-shellacked wood everywhere. When I first thought of maybe buying this new GX, I thought it would come with one of those cheesy wood steering wheels.

The GX does have a bit of live-rear-axle bobble over bumps or pavement breaks but it's not too bad. In sport mode or sport+ it's amazingly tight. It's definitely peppier than my LR4 but also remember that I had several hundred pounds, or maybe closer to a thousand pounds, of skid plates, steel bumpers, winch, roof rack, and larger tires on mine. I also had E-rated 275/65/18 (32") tires. With the GX I'm going from the stock SL-rated 265/70R18 Toyo Open Country AT3 to a C-rated 35x12.5x17 AT3.

I bought this 2013 LR4 with 69,000 miles on August 11, 2020 at a $25,995 list price. All in I was at $28,285.33.

Between 8/11/2020 and the sale date of 5/24/24, or 3.78 years, I paid $31,013.40 in repairs & maintenance (this does NOT include the fun stuff like rack, winch, wheels, tires, bumpers, etc.). That averages to $8,196.88 per year so I guess $10k per year was a bit of an exaggeration.

The final F-you from the LR4 was a full coolant-dump on my driveway the day after I listed it for sale. $1,847.94 later the crossover pipes were replaced again.

When I sold Bam-Bam, my 2004 D2, my son stood in the driveway and cried when the buyer drove him away. For Christmas that year (2020), I made a book for him with photos of all our adventures in Bam-Bam. We all barely batted an eye when the buyer drove away with Boom-Boom, the LR4.

Wow. That does not sound like an enjoyable ownership experience. For me it’s my 04 D2. There alway something wrong with it. The list of replace part is crazy long. I also have a 94D1 with a stick. It’s been my wife’s daily for decades with kids and a dog. 204k and just replaced the alternator. OG head gaskets, clutch water pump, etc. I have had to replace a lot on it but it’s weird how some cars seem to reward you for replacing parts and others demand it and are still pissed off. lol. It’s interesting how things change over the years. When I first joined Dweb back in the mid 2000’s. I felt like there was a lot of Toyota hatred on this site. I actually would have picked a different name if I knew that before I joined. I didn’t know and was coming off of 10yrs of Toyota ownership. Now members are talking about how great they are on this forum. That would have got you a lot of comments on what to do to yourself and relatives. Even you and some farm animals. I wonder how much of the change is LR forcing us away or Toyota offing a better product these days. Sorry for the rambling over coffee this morning. Many thanks to all of you that have helped me keep my Rovers on and off the road.

You know what’s different about a Rover vs a Toyota or Lexus?

The other morning I was taking my boys to summer sports camp and I’m driving along drinking my coffee out of an old Land Rover coffee mug. I thought to myself, I’d never bother buying a Lexus mug.

Saw two new LC’s on the highway. Thought they looked good but do want to get to see one up close and the interior (have not heard the best on it)
