Awesome!

So you're just tophatting with a 3.90" sleeve and the stock 3.23 crank? That makes for a 309 (308.68). Nice!

"she's so fine, my 309, my threeeeee oooooooh niiiiiinnnnnne"

If you're old enough and used to drag race or surf.. that might be funny

So i went on a mission. I got a roller 215 billit
Hydraulic or flat? Are you hardening the cam? I wonder if you could freeze harden it?
cut to match the short nose and did a custom grind on it for mid range power 2000-5000rpm.
Almost perfect for my selfish purposes [1300-4300ish, really, looking for off idle to 4k, so..].

To clarify, are you running distributorless or with distributor? Short nose makes me think 4/4.6 rather than 3.9 but I think I rem the D&D guy saying the rover [with distributor] snout is also shorter than the Buick...but I could easily be mistaken, can you clarify? He said if I wanted to keep the dist then I could just bolt the 3.9 hardware onto the front of the 4.6. I guess I was mistaken because I had thought the front crank snout was diff between the 3.9 and the 4/4.6.

Nothing crazy on the grind but as aggressive as he could within that rpm range. I just asked him last week if he could replicate it and now that he knows what to do the answer is yes. it surpised me on the price too. much cheaper than i was expecting. yesterday i fit my rockers and was able to get a pushrod measurement.
Can you share:
- billet supplier info & cost
- cam grinder info & cost
- [Manton] pushrod info & cost
?
Called Manton pushrods and have a set being made. I cant wait to get them and have her running.
This is great, are you gonna be able to put it on the dyno? I'd love to see a Richard Holdener dyno discussion on your build [ he does a great vlog: https://youtube.com/@richardholdener172 ]
i have been fighting this cam issue for almost 2 years now.
Thanks for solving our problem:)

I'd like to see if your guy can/will do one for my slightly lower rpm spec but with some positive displacement boost.

As for sleeves they are easily done. .20 over is no issue. Pistons, rings and rods can be made or sourced. The turbo project was just something i stumbled into.
I suppose 4.0 is a bridge too far with conventional sleeves? That would make piston choices wildly accessible.

Guess i opened the door. This engine would be around 30,000$ I hate to say it but im not walking someone through all of this. Its just something i do, build engines and have for 30+ years. Now its just building and playing with toys for myself.

I'm mainly interested in that cam-train. Heck, put it together as a package and sell it :) roller cam, lifters, pushrods, springs, retainers, seals, locks...and maybe optional roller rockers (do they even make em?).. Your 2k-5500 range is pretty close to what I personally am looking for.. drop that range 500rpm and call it good. Maybe you can sell enough of them to reel back in some of that investment :)

They do make roller rockers but you have to change how the rockers mount. Then you have to run taller valve covers. Then hopefully you don’t have to make a spacer plate for the upper intake. That last mod is probably is only needed for Bosch motors.

Roller rockers was the easy part. I just removed the baffle in the valve covers for clearance and no modifications to anything. I change oil flow to run through the pushrods. Ported polished heads and intake. Custom cut heads to handle larger valve springs.I opened up the pushrod guide holes for clearance. The cam is hand cut from a 215 roller billit and ground to spec, the roller lifters no problem. custom length Manton pushrods. Can i replicate it yes. what would it cost? Say somewhere in the 10,000$ range (dont tell my wife) if i did it for myself again. Probably 20,000$ if i was to do it for someone and thats just a top end rebuild. I have had to figure out everything and its been all experimental. Next problem was timing set. No good quality timing sets were available and the cheap chinese made gears are coming cracked or breaking when installing. I have been having to order a couple each time to get one good one. I was setting lash lobe by lobe, plugs out and no compression. I had seven done when the detent broke off the cam gear on tuesday. this was spring pressure only on the cam so near nothing. I went absoluly apeshit and almost exploded. Started emailing all the UK guys but no one makes anything for bosch gems. In the morning I sent Clint at TWS a picture of the broken gear as we had a conversation about it a couple weeks ago. He sent me a picture of a custom made billit timing set. He ran with our conversation and had it made already. I couldnt get him my credit card fast enough. Dont even care what it cost just get me one. So now im about 2 weeks away from having her all together.

I think I'd be doing the machining of seats and pushrod portals myself :p The cam.. i am just amazed there is no aftermarket activity in the Old Country on for this. It just seems knuts that no hydraulic rollers are cut for these. I am not denying all your effort$... I am just incredulous.

Absolutely perfect. Not only is it a billit set its double roller and you can degree it. Way better than i expected. She is installed. Valve lash is set and after a year im back at slamming gears in the mud again. worth every penny for that timing set. You will be more than happy when you see it.
