Don't know about NJ gun laws.

In Texas if you can pass the background check you can buy a shotgun spend 30 minutes or so filling out paperwork and walk out of the store with it. That goes for any rifle. We do have a waiting period for handguns, but long guns you can buy and take home that day.

Also in Texas if you can catch someone stealing from you on your property you can use deadly force. You can't set a trap for them though.

Be careful with the deadly force. If the crook lives they can sue you if they survive. "remember the guy who shot the mugger in NY ?"

You can wire up a motion sensor and have it trigger about anything you want. "doorbell, siren, sprinkler system, or a light in your bedroom"

Call 911 and let the pro's deal with it unless he tries getting into your home. Then use whatever deterrent you feel appropriate. You can take a 5 iron and double bogey him, or a bat and swing for the fence. I keep a 12 guage pump with #4 duck loads in it behind the bedroom door. I did pump it one night due to a noise outside our window, it makes a very distinct sound and so did the footsteps leading away from the house.

A decent pump shotgun can be had for less than 200 bucks in 12 20 or .410 guage and any of those make a fine home defense gun.

Again as long as he's outside if it were me, I'd call 911 and make them deal with it. You want to know if he's out there, rig up lights with a motion sensor. Lowes sells the sensors and the lights. You can run it from an extension cord and don't have to be very skilled an electrician to do what you need.

Take care and keep us posted.

.410 for home defense? that's debatable. .20 ga is the smallest I would trust. if the 9mm vs .40 argument is out there, i doubt many folks are going to settle for a .410 for anything over a childs first shotgun.

Just for detecting purposes either install a camera in the driveway or wherever you think the guy might be entering the property. Or you can install and alarm type rod, goes by the start of the driveway and shoots a beam across, that way if a car or possibly a man cross the driveway it sends an alarm to the house. For both those if you are home, at least you get warned so you can go execute some act right on the dude.

.410 #4 steel shot at 10 feet will most certainly stop an intruder. Bonus is you don't have to be a marksman like with a handgun.

True it's no goose gun, but plenty enough even at some distance for birds, squirrels, and with a slug, deer.

You might should look at shot spread pattern with a .410

Personally I wouldn't want to get shot with a bb gun, but I am smart enough to know that a .410 is a REAL gun.

Those are just the ones that are loaded.

I moved 27 long guns in one trip when we were moving and then had to go back and move more that I found in an upstairs closet.

Keep in mind that this was AFTER my dad had his auction where a hundred handguns were sold-and this is from a man (my dad) who hated handguns.

As for Chapman... I don't care, if I wanna cal my holster/briefcase a purse, so be it! I have a mohawk as well as four or five cats running around the house/yard/shop!

This thread reminds me of a funny and recent story. I was out washing my rover in our alley ( yes I actually washed it) when a broadcast came out over the TV and or phone tree system that the police were chasing an armed and dangerous person through my neighborhood and to stay inside. Sure enough many of my buddies were chasing an armed man nearby and had not caught him yet. The only weapon I had near me at the time was my 45-70 guide gun loaded with 400 grain ultra hard cast dangerous game loads. I thought it would have been funny for the SWAT guy off duty to aprehend the bad guy with a lever gun. Luckily it never happened and he was chased all over the county and into another town.

And PT we have purses here too. I call them tactical man bags. You have to be a captain or higher to wear one though.:patriot:

Someday, I'll have a Browning single-shot in 45-70. A guy I used to shoot trap with hunted deer with a 45-70 handgun.

Another friend of mine I used to shoot trap with had just unloaded his truck when he heard glass break. Sure enough, some scumbag had broken the window out of his unlocked truck. Tiny (he weighed at least 300 pounds and was tow truck driver) picked up his unloaded trap gun and walked up behind this poor kid, slammed the door against his legs and held him at gun point with an unloaded trap gun until the cops got there. Sadly, this same guy had killed three or four intruders in his home over a four or five year period-he lived across the street from the gunshop where I hung out. The cops begged him to move out of the neighborhood as the locals just could not get it through their thick skulls that his was not a house to break into at night when he was home.

The guy who owned the gunshop across the street from Tiny was shot so many times by intruders that the ambulance guys knew him by name. The last time, he took three .45s (one to the chest) and was still able to return fire until he'd lost so much blood he couldn't hold the grip safety down.

The police got here in 20 minutes from when I called. I guess that would still be a chance to catch him as long as I keep quiet - last time he went to 4 or 5 houses and in all the cars, and eventually stole one of the cars. Its just hard to keep quiet.

A friend recommend shotgun pepper oil shells that imbed the stuff into your skin. (Do you need a firearms license for a shotgun? Keep in mind I live in the republic of NJ).

Are there no alarm techies out on this forum?

Too bad that NJ is one of but 4 states that require a permit or other paperwork before purchasing any firearm.

All prospective firearm purchasers must obtain either a permit to purchase a handgun (one permit per handgun purchase), or a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card ("FPIC") (one card allows unlimited rifle and shotgun purchases), from local law enforcement or the New Jersey State Police ("NJSP") prior to buying a firearm. N.J. Rev. Stat. ? 2C:58-3a, 3b. Applicants must provide their name, residence, place of business, age, date of birth, occupation, sex, physical description, as well as extensive personal history information. Section 2C:58-3e. Other criteria for obtaining a permit to purchase a handgun or FPIC are outlined in the New Jersey Background Checks section.

But as others have said, a shotgun should be your first consideration. Remington 870 whould be my advise. There are few sounds in the world more chilling to a miscreant than the sound of someone out-of-sight racking the slide.... A laser dot usually has a similar effect, but then the perp might not be paying attention.

Renting a guard dog, the one that's trained to hold the offender on the spot, seems like the best option to me.

Then, you can come out and enjoy the show.

Electric fence low to the ground or chest high should get his attention, may be something that would alarm if the fence is touched, he takes a tingle it may slow him down till the cops get there.

Harpoon him with about 100' of steel cable anchored to a post in your yard. That should slow him down until the po-po gets there.
