I have two plastic boxes (with holes drilled in the bottom of them for drainage) that are bolted to the flooring of my roof rack that keep a tree strap + shackles/tow strap in them so that the basic recovery gear aside from the winch doesn't require opening the rear door at all. I also set up the shelf that I described in my post to be able to be accessed from either opening the rear door, or-if need be-by folding the seats forward and pulling all the crap out that way.
Having redundancy in recovery gear and having it in the appropriate place in the truck has come in very handy.

If you want to check out my setup give me a holler, the truck's actually in Fredericksburg now and I'll be back down at Lejeune ~5 Jan. I actually was beside your G4 the other day on Rt 1 heading S from Massaponnax but was in a Tacoma and didn't want to be some kind of weird stalker waving and yelling in the rain.

If you want to use that space that badly, get a dog guard and strap light weight things to it up high. Otherwise, I think there are much more accessible places to store things. Roof rack, in front of back seats, side compartments, etc.
