Peter, i agree on the lumber part being heavy and potentially getting water logged. I ll see what i can come up aluminum/metal wise within next few days and will post up the route i m gonna go.

this thread just doesn't stop. I purchased several ammo cans last month and I'm stocking up on Pelicans to start building my new setup for the D2. Cant wait.

That's a little much for me. Sinuhe used the bullet catch. I'm thinking the "brass ball catch" mounted discretely under the drawer. With a door table on the back the drawer really has no place to go.

Until you are stuck on a hill and need to open the backdoor to get something from your recovery kit, a tool, etc.

Yeah, I agree. I changed this after just such an incident.

I drilled a hole from the top of the box down into the side of the drawer and inserted a pin. I asked Sinuhe if this ever happened to him and he said no, only camping gear is in the back, all recovery gear is up front. I've talked to a few people who go with this methode and they have convinced me that opening the back door for any reason is a poor idea when on a hill. Cargo box or not. So I'll be moving mine to behind the driver side seat.

I used marine-grade plywood, glued, dado'd, and screwed the box carcass and then had them Line-x'd inside and out! The drawers are constructed the same way. I've spilled gas, water, diesel, oil, you name it - there's no way in hell moisture will ever penetrate!

I used marine grade as well with a rhino type coating on it. But I then used 1" aluminum L brackets along the outer edges to provide better rigidity. I am doing up one for the D2 now but trying to look at alternatived with this thread. One idea I was going to do was drill out locator holes in the bottom of the box so that I can use the tie down points in the truck to secure the box from the inside.

This is an extremely valid point and worth reiterating as this thread comes back to life. I have two plastic boxes (with holes drilled in the bottom of them for drainage) that are bolted to the flooring of my roof rack that keep a tree strap + shackles/tow strap in them so that the basic recovery gear aside from the winch doesn't require opening the rear door at all. I also set up the shelf that I described in my post to be able to be accessed from either opening the rear door, or-if need be-by folding the seats forward and pulling all the crap out that way.

Having redundancy in recovery gear and having it in the appropriate place in the truck has come in very handy.

If you want to check out my setup give me a holler, the truck's actually in Fredericksburg now and I'll be back down at Lejeune ~5 Jan. I actually was beside your G4 the other day on Rt 1 heading S from Massaponnax but was in a Tacoma and didn't want to be some kind of weird stalker waving and yelling in the rain.

Hey dude, yeah i wouldnt mind taking a look. Let me know where it at. I should be around this weekend. I usually keep the tree strap, shackles, etc. accessible as well, the drawers would be nice for stowing crap you might not need right away.

Well I just removed my rear seat and I'm HAPPY to have found this thread. Anything new happened with anyone and their cargo area since the last post? I'm looking to build out my truck for OTR trips.

Yep, that's a nice clean setup. I'll look for the other thread also for more details... still looking for ideas.

Also...

Do you know of anyone who has suspended a lightweight box in the area between the two upper windows in back? It's "dead space" anyway as far as rearview visibility. Seems like a nice place to setup a low profile lightweight box for small gear, maybe first aid kit and such.

Thoughts?

"suspend"? How do you plan on keeping a box up there?

If you want to use that space that badly, get a dog guard and strap light weight things to it up high. Otherwise, I think there are much more accessible places to store things. Roof rack, in front of back seats, side compartments, etc.

Dude - I dunno yet, but seeing as how there's metal behind that plastic I'm sure I can figure out something for a nice secure low-profile drawer.

I do know I really don't wanna "halve" my cargo area with something like a dog guard. A lightweight drawer secured with aluminum crossbars would probably work pretty good.

I'll put up pictures if I take the idea any further, or if someone else gets to it before I do hopefully they will share. I know we got some master fabricators in here whose gears are probably already spinning. (I'm thinking there is a commercial product idea here...)

Why is that everyone who builds an ultimate cargo box ends up selling it eventually? The reason always seems to be "This thing is totally awesome but I've decided to go in a different direction" but I think they're something more to it....

removed rear seats, thru-bolted 1/2" plywood, tiedowns as needed
easy to sleep in and secure gear
best for hauling stuff, not people, but I left in one jump seat for an extra passenger.

I tried the box thing, but that was a pain in the ass.
