Why can you do one and not the other?

Wow...On a ship with 5,000 people a couple of guys are sneaking a smoke and start a $70MM fire, and they guys who's careers are ended are the Capt and XO.:(

That's just the way it is in the Navy, especially if the ship runs aground. The captain could have been off-duty at the time, asleep in his quarters, with no resulting hull damage...he'll still get canned, along with whoever was standing watch at the time.

Oh, I know that. I was just pointing out how unfair that's got to feel....

You should have lived in Europe.
Untill recently last 5 yrs , it was acceptable to have a drink during a break.
Up untill 5yrs ago Guinness was available in the cafeterias where
my company employees had there breaks.

I just got back from Italy and Greece and the boat crews who ran our liberty boats definintely took lunch breaks in the middle of the day and would down a couple bottles of wine and then get right back to hauling us back and forth to our ship. The worst part was being on watch with them and not be able to drink too! Its still pretty much an accepted thing over there to have wine with lunch, but of course they dont get all wasted in the middle of the day.

I served on the Washington for a little while a couple of years ago, but the captain can definitely get fired for anything. The ex-commanding officer of my current ship the USS Harry Truman got fired because one of the quarterdeck watches let a civilian come aboard in England without an escort and he roamed all over the ship for a day.

Just "rat" on them. Tell HR and facilities. Likely that would fix it better than face to face confrontation.

Seriously?

You must be the biggest buzz kill of the company. "Lets tell on them behind their backs--tee hee heee."

You dont need to go kicking people in the shins and spitting at them in a face to face 'confrontation.' There is the sane, middle ground of having a chat with someone, where you politely express that their action is not appreciated. If that does not work, THEN you take it up with managers/HR. God, talk about going for the nuclear option at stage one.

BTW, I know it sounds like its directed right at you. But this was not. Just trying to put the idea of a nice conversation out there, since a lot of us would normally overlook it as a possibility.

The argument that because 'smokers' get a break 'drinkers' should to, is false. Just because one thing is bad, does not make another one alright.

The reason smoking is tolerated, is it makes TONS of money for the US while NOT created a dangerous workplace--sadly, alcohol would make MORE money but also create MORE risks. I say this while personally supporting the 2 shot a day limit at work.

Drinks should not be allowed at work, but in the same token, smoking should not be allowed at work either. They are both bad for different reasons in a workplace. Problem solved :patriot:

No ones ever told me I can't have a drink while I'm on the job, although just because I can doesn't mean I should or would.

Then again, in my line of work a good amount of business transpires over drinks, whether it be at lunch or over dinner.
