I'm about to rebuild my 4.0, looking for recommendations on parts sources. Going to try to find a used 4.6 crank and rods, so in addition to those looking for new crank/rod bearings, pistons, rings, gaskets, etc.

MB 617 diesel into a rover

Any updates? Considering some sort of swap and like the idea of the 617 given it's proven reliability.

used Bosch timing chain and gear set

Thanks for your thoughtful and useful reply. I do think a timing set with 5000 miles on it may be of use to someone.

    used GEMS fuel injectors

Set of 8 used fuel injectors from a GEMS 4.0, assume these were original so they have 128k miles on them. Taken from a motor that was running fine. Hopefully useful to someone as spares. $45 shipped within the continental US.

stalling on restart, only when really hot

This started happening a few months ago when warm weather returned. 96 DI starts, runs, and idles fine in all conditions. EXCEPT when I restart it after it is really hot. Like driving for 30mins or more in hot weather with the AC on. In that case it will stall when I restart it. If I give...

best current options for radiator, water pump, and fan clutch

Thanks PT. I already have all of the replacement hoses ready to go. Any advice on where to find a Q-H pump? The auto parts retailers are getting to be a bit of a crap shoot nowadays, they just sell you what their computer pulls up and sometimes do not know who the manufacturer is.

best current options for radiator, water pump, and fan clutch

I've been reading through the old posts on these topics and wanted to get some current opinions. I'm about to replace the radiator, water pump, and fan clutch on my 96 DI and would like opinions on what are currently the best choices. I see a number of rads listed on the typical Rover parts...

    radio code

Answering my own question here. If you lock the radio you need to leave the key in position 1 for an hour _and_ you need to leave the radio on for that hour as well. The latter is what I was missing, kinda embarrassing I did not figure that out on the first try.

    radio code

I just ran into this same problem on my 96 DI. Bad alternator ran the battery down, radio needs code. But I cannot get it to accept the code, it just beeps at me. Left the key in position 1 for over an hour tonight, still no luck. I have reset this radio with this code several times in the...

Help with R&P set up (LONG)

Bummer, the local GM parts counter here had the marking compound in stock. It works much better than machinist's blue, that what I started with. Hopefully you are done by now. If not, one alternative to a torque wrench is some scrap metal strap, a fish scale, and math. Bolt a strap across...

Help with R&P set up (LONG)

Suggestions: Bicycle shop may have an inch pound torque wrench (Park tools makes them for bikes.) Sears may also have one small enough. Make sure you are preloading the carrier bearings as well. The method I used was to tighten the ring gear side until there was almost zero backlash, then...

So, synthetic ropes turn to rigid cables when frozen.

How about just making a cover to wrap over the winch line to keep the water out? I used some heavy vinyl stuff from the fabric store and some velcro. Cut into the appropriate size rectangle so that the width spans the whole winch spool from side to side and the length will wrap around the...

    king pins?

Also search here for "RAVE CD", get one for yourself. It has the shop manual on it and it will show you the procedure and spec for doing this adjustment. You can probably get away with just subtracting a shim or two until the preload is on spec. If anything is worn it is likely the upper...

    Grip Tape

I found some 3M brand grip tape at Home Depot and it has held up very well on my sliders. No signs of sun damage in almost 2 years.

    hi-lift on front bumper?

See my post #18 in this thread for what I did. If you do not have access to a welder maybe you could get the RTE guys to seld some bolts in for you when they make the bumper.

Pinion and Carrier Bearings D2 part numbers

No real need to jack up the truck to remove the driveshaft. Remove the bolts on the axle end of the shaft. Then put the transfer case in neutral so you can spin the shaft and get access to the 4 bolts on the transfer case end. Actually if you are worried about the apt manager just take your...

    Anyone heard of these?

I saw these a while back in popular science and decided against them... Some interesting discussion here. And here is about the closest thing to scientific test results I could find. Assuming I could get a 2.7% increase in mileage as described in the test above, I would save about $40 per...
