I started out with the wolverine boots very comfortable didnt last. I blew through some American made redwings in less than a year when I was doing the blue collar thing. I switched over to Danners and didnt look back. Both have been the heavy welt "logger/lineman" style which can be beat. I think it all depends on what you are using the boot for, obviously.

combat boots, cheap you can get steel toe and last a long damn time under normal usage :D
Yup, best boots for the price out there. With 2 kids in the AF I can get them pretty cheap.

Wolverines are junk, I hear redwings will just last fucking forever.

Also, I have a pair of montrails that I really like but, haven't had them long enough to recommend them to anyone.

I'll second the montrail's. I have a set of gtx's with a year and a half on them and they feel good at the end of the day. I wear them from 6:30 in the morning to 6 in the evening and never had any comfort issues.

I got about 3 good years out of my last set of redwings, but its hard to throw them away when they are broken in just right :D

Justins last longer, but they weigh a crap ton more. Almost took out the tv kicking them off on the coffee table once.

My husband has a pair of Carolina loggers that he wears in the snow and likes but they are heavy for daily wear. He also has a pair of Double H lacers that he has worn for many years and really loves. He recently went back to some Tony Lama buckaroos and is enjoying those for daily wear b/c the new ones have rubber soles and comfy inserts!

I have two pairs of Justin cowboy boots that are really comfortable. And a pair of Merrell hiking boots that I also love. I also have two pairs of Ariat riding boots that I've almost worn out b/c they are so comfortable. One pair I've had since 1997! For women wearing heels at work all day though, anything else is comfortable!

Go out and try on a bunch of different pairs. Look at styles (lacers or pull on? flat heel or stacked?) you like online and then find a local store where you can get into them.

Why not Red Wings?

It a culture thing here. I already have a dodge truck and a carhart coat so if i get red wings i might as well start dipping skoal, drinking bud light and cooking meth.

You using for only work or out and about as well?

That's part of it, when I go on weekend trips I feel stupid bringing multiple pairs of shoes. Makes me feel like a metro sexual, or Goose not sure which is worse. I like boots that don't have to aggressive of a tred so I don't track mud in everywhere and want something I can polish and look semi respectable if I want.

I wore Docs when I worked as a waitress in college--bought them because they were easy to wipe off and had the oil resistant soles--but I never found them to be very comfortable. I still have them at my parent's house and they hardly show any wear! I'm betting they were still the "Made in England" ones back then...

I think it's pretty cool that they retained some production in the UK for those people that want quality products and are willing to pay for it. Most companies just shift their entire production to Asia to cater to the disposable consumer today.

I had a pair of Docs back in the 80s and those things were kick ass. They looked cool and were built like a tank.

Marty if you are looking for a replacement for Docs you can't go wrong with Blundstones. Once you start wearing them you can't stop. They make "industrial" models too. You may have to order them from overseas though. I love my 550's and am always going to them.

Now for heavy duty I can't believe no one has mentioned Chippewa boots! Heavy duty as hell, repairable and built in the USA.

The hell with boots, Vans slip ons, checkerboard pattern if you must.:D

J/K, These are hiking boots, but I've had a pair of Alico boots for a long time. They are designed to be resoled, and when you order, they send you a sheet to stand on so you can trace your foot and they build for you, not some production boot. They are made on Italy, they also make work boots too. I got mine in college, and still have them. Currently they are over13 yrs old. They kick ass.
They even accept rigid crampons if you like to climb ice... since I'm sure you have a ton of that in KY.

I've always liked the pull-on Blunnies--didn't know they made lace-ups as well! Lots of "horsey" people wear them. :)

Mike--we noticed (after buying them) that Ivan's new Tony Lama cowboy boots were made in China! But his older pair (with the leather sole) were made in the USA.
They've just come out with a "Handcrafted USA" line that is made here and goes with their 100-year anniversary, and I noticed the Justin Boots company has done the same. I hope more companies will offer products like that!

See post #17. Cheeseheads do make some nice shoes. When I was wearing a suit everyday, I had a rotation of three pairs of Allen Edmonds. Those shoes were kick ass. I used to drive to Wisconsin on business and would go to the outlet store at the HQ in Port Washington. I bought several pairs for $170ish.

Funny you should mention both.
I've had Georgia steel toe boots when I worked at Scripps - wore the soles completely flat, mostly rubbing on non-slip surface on decks. Ever since, wanted to replace them with something - Eccos are likely to be on my feet next week.

ArmyRover - combat boots suck in snow/ice. At least, the desert variety.
