Have you looked into a Acura NSX? Lots of refinement but a TAD pricey

Kyle,

All my cars are running. The BMW would be running well too if it were someone other than the incompetents trying to fix it. It has issued with the clutch release I think which has made it terrible to drive and has now cooked the clutch.

I have gotton good at keeping things running. No "spare cars" will do that for you. we have two happy new disco owners thanks to Lucas and Stewey being sold on and the LWB and D90 both run happily, despite their 10 years of age.

Melissa,

Sorry. :( You are new and interesting, everyone else I have been around with. Humm, I know of three BBs in Texas, Bickel & Brewer (good on you if you worked there, you make get that Enzo soon) Baron & Budd (mumm toxic torts) and of course the BB (Baker Botts).

Since you said 150+ I would have to say . . . well we all know which one.

I am suprised that no one there has anything really nice. I know Texas is a truck place but still. I have a friend at SMH and he has a nice audi.

Spend a couple years there and you will get into the greedy associate thing.

Remember everyone,
Ron went to Washington and Lee, where bling is king. You should come count the number of LRs, BMWs, MBs, and Audis in the FRESHMAN lot. For example, one member of my fraternity arrived on campus freshman year with a new BMW M3. However, after 2 years, he decided that it just wasn't what he wanted. He came back last year with a new Yukon Denali loaded with front/rear heated seats, XM radio, and every other option known to mankind. So for Ron, this really is a big deal. Eric- I agree completely with the VW suggestion- my daily driver when I get out of school is going to be a diesel VW. Good luck with the law stuff Ron! You need to come down here for homecoming- I've gotten Contact to bring in Bill Burke for an off-road seminar and speech.

Ron,

You need a Big Ass Escalade with the DVD, Spinners, and license plate that says; KEEPITRL That reads "Keep it Real" :D

On a serious note, I am sorry to here that your new Bimmer is a POS. I have always been a Bimmer fan, but from what I have been reading in the Journal, times are a changing. :(

This is actually Alyssa...

We just sold the defender today, and now with the BMW not running at all, and the '59 not terribly practical (or insured for) daily driving, we're down to just the LWB. So the search is on, and quick.

Ron detests Audis. I don't really understand why, but to each his own. Ferraris are beautiful works of art, but are SO uncomfortable. We traded one recently and thought about it, but could barely stand driving it around the lot.

As for why a nice car... Why not? I know we're skewed by where we live, and also where I work doesn't help things. We've got the funds & we both want a nice car, so what's the problem?

We got the BMW so we would have something reliable and really nice, that I would enjoy and Ron would enjoy. It ended up being a nightmare with more problems than any 10+ year old vehicle we've ever owned-- and now has had TWO fires. Unfortunately, neither of us like the MB E320 (too mushy), Ron won't get an Audi, I can't stand Lexus, Acura, Infinity, and the US doesn't produce anything I'd like to buy. The X and S Type Jags are just ugly and disguised American cars, and the XJ is a little too $$$. I love Volvos, but they are a little too "family" for us right now. I would like to get a used new RR, and hope that would be the direction we go, but the darn things aren't depreciating that much, so they are still way up there in price. Neither of us fit in a Discovery II or a Freelander, so we've never gone that direction. Ron doesn't fit in a Boxter, which would have been a great choice. We looked at the new 911, and I have to admit I really like it, but the dog won't fit comfortably, and neither will any luggage. I didn't have enough leg room in the old 911. While that would be really nice, it just isn't practical (and again, the $$$ is quite high). My requirements are leg room, copious lumbar support, heated seats, CD, room for the dog (but I'm ok with a rear seat that people can't fit in, since we rarely have people in the back), comfy for a long trip, and room to fit luggage for a trip AND the dog at the same time). I would really LIKE navigation and a sunroof, but I could live without. Ron's recently gotten on this kick that he doesn't want a new car, only old cars that have already depreciated so much they will barely change in value. I'm sick of driving old cars and want something nice, luxurious, and new.

What about a 1999-2001 P38a RR? It's not the new style granted, but they are very nice and are comfortable on long trips and drive well on the highway. Also might think about a late 90s/early 00 740i. Of course, if I were going for an older car that wont depreciate much more I'd also consider the old style MB S class (420SEL, 560SEL). Just a thought

It's Alyssa again...

The Ferarri was in the $20k's. Even paying just over wholesale and on a car with higher mileage, a used 2003 RR is still considerably more expensive than any of the other newer cars we are talking about (with the exception of the 911). And the Defender we sold isn't going to come anywhere close to covering the cost of any of these cars.... it's not like we got $40k for it! LOL.

I'm certainly going to consider a P38a, but that again leaves us with 2 rovers for daily drivers and a very pricey commute for Ron. Right now I drive about 3k miles a year, so I couldn't care less about gas mileage. But when he's driving back and forth to DC, Wilmington, or NYC, it's going to matter...even if just for the amount of time lost filling up and not the price of gas itself. Also, the P38a (and most certainly the LWB) aren't exactly rocketships on the highway.

And sorry, but no Subarus for me.

WOW, Alyssa. I not sure what you would want then. Good luck with your quest and it does sound like a quest.

I love the old body S class-- I'm just not sure Ron does. I think that's a very good suggestion.

Pardon a dumb question, but is high speed capability a criteria? Hmmm, unfortunately you guys are so far out of my league that I don't even dream about the options available to you...HA!

By the way, I know you've probably driven plenty of them, but a P38a with a 4.6 doesn't do that bad on the highway. We just sold our 97 HSE and I still miss it, but I don't miss (as you previously stated) the fuel costs of having two rovers. There certainly is the option of installing the new power chip along with performance exhaust and improved air intake. That should help you get to work a little faster.

Just a thought. They are beautiful. Thanks for the link Chris M. Do we know the mpg highway with them Alyssa? That would be an investment. However, 77K is overpriced IMHO.

Gas on the RR. The cheapest gas my friend in Philly could find was here: 7913-29 Oxford Ave. It was a 1.80 per gallon for regular. We all know that you should run the highest octane so lets just guess 2.10 a gallon to be safe. The RR has a 26 gallon tank (@ the least the new 2003 and up do). 26 times 2.10= 54.60 per fill up and Ron is driving well over 60 plus a day? Lets say on the highway Mr. Brown gets 19 mpg. Fill ups per week are still looking @ well over $100 per week. $400.00 per month and lastly 5K per year. Now ask me why I bought a Honda Civic? For what I have saved (before I bought the Honda) on gas in the Honda versus the Disco I could have invested well over 4K in Kerr/McGee Stock by now with a remunerative profit return. 0.02 cents..or a Sweet New LV Briefcase to carry ..So you can "fit in better" ;)
