I think it's funny, so many people here try to impress everyone by putting so much emphasis on how they are not interested in impressing anyone...

If you really didn't give a shit, you wouldn't chime in at all.

"Hey everybody! Look at me, look how much I don't care what you think...I SAID I don't care what you think...dammit look over here at me not caring!!!"

Ha ha, like Bart Simpson; "Hey everybody, pay attention to me!"
Sorry, I'm not trying to be a dick and I meant no offense. It's just that I really don't get the fancy watch thing. Maybe it's just a touchy subject with me because my son-in-law's father thinks you're not shit if you don't have a Rolex. Yet the same guy can't (and probably wouldn't) change his oil or repair a leaky faucet.

It's fine if you don't get it. The issue is that you are questioning other's desires to wear a nice watch. Using Wturners analogy, if you didn't care what others were wearing, you wouldn't have made the comment. Do you somehow feel inferior to the person that sports the Rolex?

I own nice watches because I like them. I appreciate nice things. Is there something wrong with having something nice? Is it somehow in bad taste to wear a nice watch? Is it offensive to the people that can't afford them?

What the fuck does having the ability to repair a leaky faucet have to do with owning a Rolex? I repair leaky faucets because I can and I don't like paying people when I can do the job and have the time. If a guy has enough money and could care less about paying someone and also owns a Rolex, is that offensive to you?

Your comments are steeped in envy.

Associating Rolex ownership with being an a-hole is as ignorant as associating Land Rover ownership with being an a-hole.

Any watch is simply a tool. If you don't appreciate what a Rolex is that's cool. You certainly don't need one to tell the time.

However, I have come to appreciate my rather plain stainless Submariner.

I like the fact that if Armageddon happened tomorrow my submariner could still be working 50 years from now. It doesn't require batteries. It doesn't have any bells or whistles or extra functions.

I like the fact that is a timeless design that is equally at home no matter what I'm doing. Whether scuba diving, working on my truck, mucking out a horse stall or going to the Opera.

Being a student of history, I also appreciate how the company Rolex was founded as well as the history of the submariner.

If none of that means anything to you than it obviously is not worth owning one for you.

You could say the same thing about owning a Land Rover.

I was like you, too, once. I never understood it. $5k for a watch??? Nigga please.

But over time they grew on me. I'm not a fan of what a lot of others talk about. I don't like the IWC, Breitling, Ulysse nardin, Xezo, Paneri, etc..... style watches. They're not my thing.

I do, however, really dig the Seamaster, GMT, Deep Sea, Speedmaster, Omega/Rolex type watches. I love the designs, and the quality of the watches is great.

I've got a Movado that I paid about $700.00 for. I dig the look of the watch and it looks nice when I play dress up. At one time I wore that watch constantly. It's got welding slag stuck to the band and the crystal has been scratched. Over the coarse of 3 years, the watch was destroyed, basically. From 10-feet away it looks good still, but up close it's trashed.

If my Movado was in tip top shape, I could fetch about $250.00 for it today on ebay.

But my Omega is a different story. I wear the watch a lot. I wear it to work everyday, I wear it to the woods a lot, shoot range, etc.... I wear it at least 5-days a week. The crystal has yet to scratch and the band still looks new. If I were to sell the Omega today, I could probably get damn near what I paid for it.

I've got a G-Shock, too. It's about 6 years old. It's a great watch for a beater. I like my G-shock. But it's no Omega. I really like my Omega. But my Omega is no Rolex.

If these watches are not your thing, cool. I can't blame you, either. Watches like these are an addiction and it can get expensive. I've had my Omega for a year but I'm always looking at the Rolex. I'm always looking at other Omegas. Kind of like guns....do I need 13 guns?

But I like my Omega because it goes with everything. I can wear it to work, diving, shooting, out to eat, in the woods.......it looks good everywhere. I like it and it's going to last a very long time.

My next watch is an IWC Pilot's watch; not an over the top Big Pilot, but the understated Mark XV or something similar. Since I'm really sensitive of other people's feelings and don't want to offend anybody who has an inferiority complex, it will be perfect. The only people that will know what it is is another watch fan. The Casio or die types will just think its another watch.

Most guys I see wearing subs probally cant get a penny out of the deep end of the pool.

And most people I see driving Land Rovers do not know what low range is for nor could they pick a line offroad if their life depended on it.

Jesus, I wish Chapman would stop saying things I agree with.

I got my Rolex for a birthday 26 years ago. In that time, it's been sent back to the factory twice after I broke it. The last time it was rebuilt, the horologist who fixed it told me if it hadn't been for my brother in law being his friend he would have told me the watch was unrepairable. At the time, it was my shop watch, velcro band and all. Now, it's a dress watch only.

If you guys want to buy watches, call Vladimir at Reiss-Nichols in Indianapolis (my brother in law). Last month, he sold several $80K watches. His personal watch collection is getting perilously close to the million dollar mark-what a way to keep your portfolio. He keeps showing up with crazy fucking watches that I'd never heard of. 20 years ago, I was a watch snob, now I'm too cheap to buy a GMT copy from Hong Kong..

Fine watches (whatever your favorite brand is) are great because of their looks, quality, etc etc. They are from the same line of things as nice cars, yachts, and so on. But IMO it all depends on who has them. If you are some snob who has not worked a day in your life and got the said Rolex, Omega, Mercedes, BMW and so on handed to you by your parents, and you are flaunting it like its your own shit, then that makes u a snob and an a-hole. But if you have genuinely worked for something nice and bought it with your own money, then its a different story. Hence, its hard to judge someone to be an a-hole/snob just by seeing them wearing an expensive watch or driving an expensive car. Just my opinion.

For those that actually do like nice automatic tool watches do check out Sinn and Kobold. Michael Kobold started his apprenticeship with Sinn in Germany and then came to the States and started Kobold Watch Company. He is probably the only higher end Watch company in the States. Of course like all the watch companies these days all his movements are Swiss made. Swatch Group runs the watch business. That is why Lemania movements went away. That was one of the toughest movements ever made. Now about 95% of movements are ETA and then tuned in house by the various companies. Most of the blanks are the same. Now there are a few that are still in-house movements. Rolex is one but not all theirs are. Patek, Admirer's (sp) and a few others make there own but not many.
