Well,

There are worldwide differences between same types of oils and I know most informed in NZ wouldn't touch M1 in an 'old' style Rover engine. Too thin!!
The M1 is specific to Oz and NZ I am led to believe. That is why I ONLY use oil that is manufactured and packed overseas (Total and Agip). Some of the good Castrol is done overseas as well.
I have a friend here who had many of the 'big' brands including some of the American brands independantly tested in a lab and MOST fell WAY short of the specs given. The 'ordinary' oil we got off the shelf overseas to prove his suspicions tested great.
One big US brand HAD to remove an entire product as a result.

As I said before 'old style' engines need 'old style' thinking to a point. Ya gotta admit NZ is a tough testbed for anything.

The oil 'recommendations' under the bonnet or in the hand book aren't there to waste ink.

.

Here's my problem, when people start describing a multigrade oil as 'too thin', I really start to question whether they understand anything about oil lubrication products, and how they work :ack: .

Hmm I tend to aggree a little,

But when oil engineers 'call it as they see it' I listen in. Oh, all the LR fixers 'ere including the dealers reckon our M1 is 'too thin' when it is hot for the old V8 lump. Runs past seals and they loose too much oil pressure. And you know they like a presure. :ack:

So castrol gtx 10w30 is on this list...

Is this a good approved list? Seems like damn near everything is there

Yeah, it is. If you were a oil maker, you sure woudl want to be a GM approved oil, and actually its not tough to met it. I would look to the list, but also look on the bottle. If it doesn't it say it mets the spec, then it doesn't.

I never said I agreed with the list. heck walmart's supertec is on that list.

What does brand have to do with it? If it meets spec, it meets spec. Brand means nothing.

I dont know what New Zealand requires in their oils. If you guys dont have Cats, then you can use higher ZDDP oil that we cant get. Keep in mind, our Castrol GTX in some grade cant be sold out of the us, because it doesnt meet the specs of other countries.

So, frankly, I dont know enough to agree or disagree with you..

Hi,
Cats have only been 'required' on cars for the last 4-5 years. There are loads that have them but no NZ new DIs had them. DIIs did but not a requirement at the beginning.

I just call the M1 thing as the repairers and engineers see it too.

I just got a book from this company. This is a AMERICAN oil Standards company(API), so of course they dont touch on ACEA ratings (Europe Spec) and hold on to API. These guys have a $200 Oil spec book that is very good and very in depth.

However for the $20 or so, this book does explain quite a bit and offers some good value for the money. My only complaint is they dont even notice ACEA like they do in their $200 book.

Looks like Rotella is great for our engine b/c of the higher ZDDP content... The zinc and phosphorus in ZDDP are anitwear additives that are critical at metal to metal contact points in engines. For us - where the cam lobe meets the lifters.

So - what does this mean to us? It is recommended to use a diesel oil, like Rotella, that has API rating of 15W40 CI-4 and CI-4 Plus - not CJ-4 as it has a lower ZDDP rating.
