Not being a tacti-cool person I'll pass on a paracord band. I've always had a personal preference for analog over digital so I'm leaning that direction with a NATO band

I've had my Lum Tec for 8 years or so and its a great watch. It's a Miyota automatic movement, sapphire AR-coated crystal and a PVD coated SS case. They aren't "cheap" I guess but get on watchuseeek or time zone and you can find them in the sub-$500 range. It's an American brand with crazy lume on the hands and indicators! You really can't beat a G-Shock though.... Cheap and tough as hell!

I would have put some cheese in the pic but all I had was a glass of water...

I tell the time by the frown on my wife's face. The bigger the frown the later I was fishing. I can also tell time by dog poop. If I step on some in the living room, I'm too late.

Re: Decently Priced Field Watched

They're not "decently priced" in the sense that a Casio is, but if you want something a little interesting, the Filson branded Shinola watches are on a pretty hefty sale this summer.

http://www.filson.com/summersale.html

They always do something neat each year, but the one I wanted sold out before I realized the sale was on.

It's not a perfect story given who owns them, but Shinola is indeed doing a fair amount of work with a U.S. assembly plant, and the products are good for the price.

Obviously it's not the ideal answer to the question, but it should be noted nonetheless in case they all sell out.

I have a Shinola that I save for nicer things, it is an awesome watch. That Filson sale is a great way to get into one.

The Shinola and Filson watches are nice but I'm not going to drop $500 + on a quartz movement watch just because it's 'assembled' in Detroit. If I spend that kind of coin it's not going to be on a watch I'll be wearing in the woods

That's why you pick them up on sale for $350.

They do a lot here making those things. The wages and working conditions are outstanding for the area, and it's not all "bolt it together and go". People get a fair amount of experience working with the movements, as they do actually assemble the movements from Swiss-produced parts.

It may seem a bit like busywork, and it essentially is, but it works out for everyone. You can't bitch about manufacturing going overseas if you won't support various attempts to bring even small activities back to our shores. It costs more. That's just going to happen. The price goes up, and I'm glad some are willing to pay it.

There are American-Made parts in there, as well as imports from Europe, and bits you just can't get anywhere else within reason are likely sourced from the expected nations. The Filson models use more U.S. produced parts, such as the solid leather bands.

Ragardless, it's a nice product, and it's oozing with style. Quartz never stopped anyone from buying Movado...

You'd be shocked at the places I wear and have worn my Oyster.

I'll never forget being at a Dead show at Deer Creek. I slung my backpack with my taping gear over my shoulder and just as I felt it leave my wrist, I watched my watch slide across the blacktop and right under a passing car!

It survived.

They're just watches. If you're not willing to risk damaging it, buy a cheapie or don't wear one.

For me, one of the best parts of driving a Series as my daily driver was that I didn't wear a watch. I didn't know when I'd get where I was going (not withstanding the day I ran out of fuel twice in about four hours-hey, it was a SIII!) but I knew I'd get there.

Re: Decently Priced Field Watched

The whole point behind many expensive watches is exceptional durability. The idea of buying a Rolex and beating the shit out of it isn't outlandish; it's the intended use.

All that stuff said, I've had this Timex for a long time, and it still works just fine. As you can see, the battery died last week. I'll probably replace it today. One thing I can't recommend enough is a band like that. That watch has been through hell, and still looks pretty well new.

If you don't want to make noise when checking the time or operating some feature or another, just fold the cover around. If you want to keep reflections down, leave it up; likewise leave it up to protect the face. It's also much more comfortable than a traditional band.

I keep it clean, but you can see how the cover has prevented scuffs and impact damage. I think I bought it in 1998. Maybe 1999. I'm not entirely sure, but I know it was around then because I remember where I bought it.

Re: Decently Priced Field Watched

Maybe I should've named the thread Cheap instead of Decently Priced. I'm not trying to make a fashion statement, I have a nice everyday watch for that. Just need something decently reliable it to tell time and hold up for the 10-12 outdoor trips I do a year. If it breaks in 10 years so be it - I'm only out $50 or so

Buy a Timex. That's the answer to your question.

If you sucked all their products out of circulation right this second, half the world's fighting forces would fall into confusion.

The watches are plenty tough, and they've got both analog and digital displays available. There's no sense considering anything else in that price range.

I have had my Oyster since 1983.

How many of the watches being described in this thread will have such longevity?

It's not what I'd choose today, but at the time, it was what I wanted.

It's been through some Hell and has survived it all. I will admit though, just like Land Rovers, if my brother in law wasn't an horologist I couldn't afford to have the watch serviced.

Then get a Casio. I don't know what a "field watch" is - seems like a new marketing term for a repro military watch but that's just a guess....

A field watch, while not a specific design, is generally assumed to be a weather resistant, analog display wrist watch; commonly featuring a chronograph. Beyond that, it's whatever you want it to be.

All of the above mentioned and associated aspects and features serve a variety of purposes.

I don't think he means "field watch" in that sense. I think he wants a watch to use when he's out having fun. Field watches are very useful in that capacity, but if you just want to know the time, digital displays are fine.

The rest of the "field watch" features tend to be used for land navigation, timed events, measuring in various manners, and other uses. The analog display and functionality of a traditional chronograph are required to accomplish those tasks.

Most people don't need that stuff, though. Even the people that are required to have it rarely have occasion to use it; being more of a failsafe feature-set than anything else these days.

Re: Decently Priced Field Watched

Alright, which one of you fuckers just bought my Mackinaw Field watch; the one with the double band thing?

It was finally back in stock just a few minutes ago. I went out to grab some smokes, came back, and it was gone!

So, who did it?

Timex Ironman's good too. My dad has one I bought him in about 1989. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
