Also, a dealer repaired everything (insurance covered), but screwed it up.

What type of insurance covers a mechanical failure?

Well it should be comprehensive. It wasn't your fault it happened. It was a mishap that also shouldn't raise your premium

let dis be a warnin to ye! har

10k on my napa 344 been ok, i grease every 2k or every water crossing. I've got 1 on my front shaft near the diff and 2 non-napa by the t-case.

ptschram, you must of either have gotten really unlucky and got the friday u-joints, or you've got other problems like bad pinion angles causing increase wear, and perhaps they aren't as high as quality as others, and due to this extra wear, they give out quicker.

200K miles, lifted, thrashed and driven 100 miles every day commuting. You should have seen the pinion bearing slop on the diff I just removed!

For some reason, the truck is a whole lot quieter since I replaced that diff (but thefront driveshaft is going -AGAIN!). In spite of the level of reliability I have with my Disco, it is still possessed!

Advance Auto Parts, same folks who found my reman alternator for 213.00. now please remember this is IOWA, a great place to be from...
Thanks for the lead! I stpped in today and ordered 3 for $15.88 each. I can pick them up tomorrow. Actually could get them if I wanted to drive the 7 miles to the warehouse, but since they are for rebuilding a spare propshaft, I'm in no rush.

I have rebuilt plenty of D2 front driveshafts in our shop, they are a bitch to do. I do not have any first hand experiance with these u-joints you guys are talking about, but I can tell you we use spicer u-joints and have not had a single problem. They are a bit pricey but I feel a lot more confident off road with them installed in mine.

Well...as I said before, I think this thread, maybe another...there have been so many..... Spicer doesn't make the 5-4x joints. They buy them and rebox them. From the description of them (zerk fitting in end cap) I'm guessing they are actually made by Neapco. Neapco is the only make I've seen with the zerk in the endcap.

Mine do not have a grease zek in the end cap, they have them in the normal position...inbetween caps. Will try and post pics...I believe I have another set that is not installed yet.

you can use a Spicer 5-153xx, they are pricey compared to others..about $35 to $39 but they have neoprene seals and bigger bearings in the caps so it may be worth it.

sorry just relized thats from my D1 pile:smilelol:

5-153x is the 1310 series u-joint, like in the GBR shafts. DII fronts are 1300 series.

That's interesting rovermech, cause PT said his 5-4x have them in the end caps. Maybe Spicer uses two different kinds.

Bit lost here: Is this an issue that all DIIs can have, or just those that are lifted or modified in some way? I've got 100,000km on my 2000. It gets ALL the scheduled maintenance plus double the oil change intervals, so it's on a hoist fairly often. Result so far has been a dead reliable truck, so if there's something else I need to be doing to keep it that way, I'd love to know what it is! Thanks. Sorry if I'm seeming dense here.:D

Weird, My Advance Duto store said they couldn't get them, but my local NAPA had Precision U-Joints in stock for $20.
They will say that, depending how much gumption the clerk has. Ask them to search the warehouse for 1-0005
