After all the u-joint discussions I took my 95 in to replace the front two
(and only two on a D1), found out that my super squeak was NOT an eminant U-joint failure. Now the sound has gone away but before it did it seemed to be coming from the serp. belt idler/tension pulley. loud enough to make the old folks turn and and gawk at me. Put 300 miles on it this weekend with nary a chirp, WTF??? I think there is a cross reference for this part here, I might buy one for S's and G's I'd hate to have the pulley seize up goin down the road...

Well...as I said before, I think this thread, maybe another...there have been so many..... Spicer doesn't make the 5-4x joints. They buy them and rebox them. From the description of them (zerk fitting in end cap) I'm guessing they are actually made by Neapco. Neapco is the only make I've seen with the zerk in the endcap.

When I bought my Spicer 5-4X U-joints last May (got them through a supplier at work, as we use them on our packaging machinery), the dude at the driveline shop (had them installed because I was afraid of the DC deal) told me he figured they were actualy Neapcos. He said that he thought Spicer does not make them anymore.

The joints have the Zerk on one of the end caps and do not have Spicer OR Neapco on them anywhere.

They do however, say "USA" on them. :patriot:

Peace,

Dan

My home is where my Disco is
Hey, had never seen a UJ with the grease nipple on the bearing cup. had always seen the usual one, I mean the one with the nipple in the centre between the yokes.
My D2 has the usual 45K miles, and all seems OK and normal.

I plan to rebuild mine at next service interval, just for peace of mind. I want to fit the bearing cup nipple version. Anybody out there has the part # or equivalent, as I fear the classic grease nipple between yokes can maybe interfere at some angles, or it is just me?

Thanks

Nor have I. The zerk fitting in the cross doesn't interfere with operation, just can be a pain to grease. Neapco has the zerk in the end cap, PN 1-0005. I've seen conflicting info about spicer 5-4x (the PN for the disco front), one persons says end cap, another says cross.
