mine were dry as all hell by 25ooo miles, I very much doubt it would have gone 60k

the rebuild takes about 1 hour and all you need to do is replace the 3 u joints and grease the center pivot.

I used marine grease when I did mine at 25k and it still looked perfect at 77k when I just tore it down and reinspected it.

IMHO there is no reason to go to a upsized shaft such as a spicer 1310 that GBR sells unless you are running huge tires and such...just rebuild the stocker

How thehell did you get it apart without tearing it up? When I drove the bearing cups out of the yoke, the center joint hit the center bearing tearing up the seal and the surface around it...

I have done a bunch of DC shafts and have been for 20+ years, they are a bit smaller then the standard 1310 stuff but they are pretty much exactly the same.

like the old bull said ...dont run down the hill...walk down the hill:rofl:

no really...its all about how you press it apart and were you tap with the hammer.

Sorry to hear of your mishap. Same thing happened to me on my 2001 DII @ 73K. It was the Ujoint that busted sending the driveshaft into the tranny and into my floor board. Appearantly this is a Land Rover DII Ujoint problem. If I had known this before, I would have replaced it and the driveshaft. Also, a dealer repaired everything (insurance covered), but screwed it up. I had to have it repaired by a an independant shop. I HATE the dealer and hope to never let them touch my vehicle again. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Yup, as many posts concerning alternators here a person could do worse, I'd change my alternator 3 times a year rather than fuss with my wiring issues. BTW, it was a magneti Marelli, sounds really cool when you say it to an Italian guy.

HOLY COW! I just looked at AB and the drive shaft is $400

I'll have to take a look at mine... I'll assume you can just replace the ujoints with ones with grease zerk.

I do get a little vibration up front with the truck is cold, but it goes away quickly. I always just figured it was tires and didn't worry too much.
If you decide to spend $400 don't buy AB's with the same non-servicable u-joints buy a Great Basin Rovers rebuilt one instead. I didn't feel like messing with the DC so I ordered one from them all ready to go. Worth it to me at least.

Advance auto sells them. I had bad luck with Neapcos. I just had one fail at under 5k miles. My stock ones lasted for years.
Don't forget to grease the u-joint after assembly. The assembly grease they come with is not suitable for in service use. This is true for all u-joints.

I got a whopping 98 miles out of a set of NAPA Chi-Comm u-joints and yes, they were greased!

It isn't just a lack of grease that causes the junk ones ot fail, I think it might, oh maybe, poor quality control.

So technically this could happen to anyone of us ? Should we go with dealer ones on this case only? PT ?

Those just sound like a shatty brand. I just replaced my factory u-joints with Neapco 1-0005's and they seem very well-built.
