I wondered about this myself. Not that my 99 would ever have this fault but maybe a D2 with SAI might. Since the radiator has a temp sensor that is supposed to throw a fault if the temp from the radiator and engine don't match. I'm betting the temp discrepancy is probably 20-40 degree sweep to get a fault.

I have SAI and no faults after about 7K miles.

For you guys that did the inline modification with a standard type thermostat. Which way does the thermostat face in the housing? Or which way is water flowing in the top hose on a DII? Thanks, should have the modification done tonight.

NoPvmt- i asked a similar question not too long ago. If memory serves, when the truck is off you can spin the fan either direction, but it will be tougher to spin the warmer the truck was when you turned it off. So in the morning it should spin pretty free, but say after a drive it will be tougher to spin.

happy to report 182-188 city / hwy driving and occasionally hitting 190-193 during long idle but quickly goes down to 190-188 at idle. That surely beats high 190-210 idling. It used to be 188-195 city / hwy driving.

Nice job...the top of the fan shroud looks really good, much cleaner than mine.

Hey guys, I read through this thread a couple weeks ago, but maybe I missed this. I'm going to wait until I've had my engine checked out before considering the in-line t-stat mod. That said, on a DII was any modification of the upper fan shroud necessary when replacing just the fan clutch?

I mangled the nut on my fan clutch while replacing my water pump, so I was going to go ahead put the Imperial xx158 clutch on. Comparing the replacement to the original, it looks like the shaft is 1/2" to 3/4" longer...

Fits fine. It does sit a little closer to the radiator.

I am a newer member here on Discoweb and I want to thank all of you who have posted on this thread. I am a former 1992 Range Rover Classic 3.9 V8 Owner that I sold with 200k miles. I currently own a 1988 RRC 3.5 V8 w/ 150k and a 2003 Discovery II SE w/ 57k. The Discovery is my daily driver and I recently purchased it. I made sure the VIN # was outside of the VIN range for the failed oil pumps before I purchased. It is in great shape, I have had all fluids changed and have already put 4k miles on it. The one major thing I noticed after a few weeks of ownership was the ill managed engine temperature compared to Land Rover models of years past. For example, today, I was on my 6 mile commute in semi-heavy traffic (nothing above 30mph and stop and go), it was 60*F outside (I live in Denver), and about 4-5 miles into my commute (15-20 min.) the auxilliary fan popped on. My A/C was not on. I even experimented this morning by revving the engine a few times with the Viscous Fan engaged and the Auxilliary fan then turned off, but turned back on about 3 minutes later. All of this without the A/C on. My Rover mechanic and I have checked everything... Viscous Fan is operable, Aux fan operable, T-Stat is operable, New Coolant, no leaks, Head Gasket OK etc. My gauge in the truck does not move from the middle, but I know this engine is running too hot or too hot for my comfort level anyway. After reading all of these posts and others, I have learned more about the operation of the Aux fan in the 2003 DII (82*F and under 50mph or 212*) and the fact that many others are struggling with engine temps on the DII. I just purchased a scanguage and ordered all of the parts for the in-line T-Stat modification some have done here. I will post my pre and post modification temps and results. I do have a couple of questions...
I know that people have used a Chevy 350 V8 Tstat for the modification with a 1/8th inch hole drilled. Do any of you have a part number for the Tstat with a part number for the appropriate gasket that fit into the Mezziere Tstat housing to prevent any leaks? Thanks again for all of your help with this issue on the DII.

Thanks again,
Rob
