I'm a Watch Snob

Barely... I didn't actually spend enough money to be a true watch snob. But hey, I've been wearing an $8.00 Columbia Sportswear Ironman Wannabe watch for the past 3 years. It is still going, it outlasted the watch I had before I bought it -- a $250.00 Seiko Chronograph listed as 20 bar, but it died after 3 years.

Well, I'm giving Seiko another chance, and this time I'll get the seals replaced every 2 years!

Bulova make some nice entry point watches. I have a marine star automatic. I would suggest a citizen eco drive too.

I have both of those and both are good, my Eco drive is a chrono and the second hand will no longer return to 12 when it is suppose to. My favorite is Omega though, but I hardly wear any of my watches.

I have had one of these for a couple years now. Really like it, although I will probably never use all the stuff on it.

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-PAW1200...1_33?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1293458797&sr=1-33

I have had Seiko kinetics and Citizen eco-drives. The mechanisms wear out far too quickly and cost a nice $ to have repaired. By the way, if anyone knows of a good repair shop for Seiko kinetics, please let me know. I have a pair of matching his and hers watches that are really nice, but do not work any longer.

I've had a few "real" watches over the years, one of them being -

http://www.amazon.com/TAG-Heuer-CV2010-BA0786-Automatic-Chronograph/dp/B000JYDZEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293459199&sr=8-1

...that I received as a gift on my 30th B-day some years ago...

Beautiful watch, to look at, but a POS to wear...crown broke from regular use within a year...sent it in to one of the handful of Tag certified repair places and didn't get it back for 7 months...

4 months later went swimming and the watch glass fogged up from the inside...instead of sending it back again, and not having it for another few months, I unscrewed the crown and let it dry out for a few days...worked out well and didn't get any water spots...

...fast forward a couple of years and the crown broke again and both push buttons fell out...POS...

15+ years with various Casio G-Shocks and less than 1 year with an Omega Speedmaster Professional HB-SIA Co-Axial GMT Chronograph limited edition.
The Omega kicks Casios' ass but I still wear Casios day to day.

I beat the shit out of my daily-wear Wenger 78119 (limited production automatic chronograph) for 9 years, then sold it to a guy in England last year and it's still going strong. Looked great when I sold it too.
I'm now repeating the process with a Wenger 78189.

Before & After pix of my old 78119, and a random pic of a 78189:

Why does anyone even wear a watch anymore?

My brother in law is an horologist. He recently sold three watches to one man with a combined cost of 2.4 million dollars.

It will take at least three years for them to be made and shipped.

My 1982 vintage Rolex takes a licking and keeps on ticking, just don't expect it to tell the correct time. I couldn't tell you the last time I wore it.

Of course, it's Tritium, and lots of it!

My Wenger 78189 was made 10 years ago and still glows like crazy. I actually have two of these. One I bought new a decade ago. It's configured with a different bracelet and I only wear that one on special occasions. The other I bought from an estate sale last year about a month after I sold my 78119. That one is my daily-wear piece.
I also had a Wenger 78199 and I regret selling that one, but a period of unemployment forced me out of the and my 78109, which is the white-dialed version of the 78119. Fortunately, I sold them at a hefty profit.
It was neat when I had the entire collection of all four models simultaneously for that brief 3 year period.

For anyone looking to get into an automatic chronograph of good value now, I would recommend one from Victorinox, or the Tissot PR516 line.
If you want something in limited production, check into the Swiss-contracted watches from Portuguese designer, Prometheus, especially if the Euro falls below 1.25.

I wore a Tag Heuer Links watch for the past 5 years until the battery died on it about 3 weeks ago. Need to get it replaced, but in the meanwhile, this Seiko Kinetic is working well for me and is lighter too. A watch and wedding ring are about the only jewelry I will wear.
