I agree that $80k would be a bust. $60K is doable, $65K and even closer to $70k with some options. The Trailmaster edition (which I have reserved) is starting at £69,000 in the UK which converts to $85,468 today. No way this thing is worth that much.

I think the durability will be good but of course no one can know for sure. The BMW engine is detuned to about 280 HP, the ZF transmission is severely undertaxed, the drivetrain is over-built, the components are all pretty standard fare, etc. This all bodes well for the longevity of the vehicle but these things could also be plagued with software bugs the first year out. Who knows....

I just configured my exact Trailmaster edition using the UK website.

Base price is £69,000.

Options I chose are:

BMW engine £0.00
Mushroom color £530.00
Heat reflective privacy glass £430.00
Seat covers front £300.00
Seat covers rear £300.00
Rubber floor mats £158.00
Integrated Heavy Duty Winch 5.5 tonnes £3,345.00
Quick release tie down rings £38.00
Tailgate table £317.00
Roof rack £1,728.00

Total £76,146.00

94,327.61 United States Dollar

At today's exchange rate of 1.24 dollars to the pound, some of those option prices are truly ridiculous. Over $4,000 for an integrated winch? $744 for seat covers? $393 tailgate table? Might have to order a true stripped down version. But the winch, or a winch, is mandatory for me. I also wonder what the delivery charge is going to be....

IDK, it is a cool looking rig and has the uniqueness vibe going for it. But if I'm being practical why would I buy that when I can pick up this and deck it out for 3/4 the cost?

Everyone on this forum never had 300k reliablity, at least not that I have heard. That's Toyota territory and LR doesn't play there. If the engine lasts, the body rots away.
My 290-kmi D1 had original engine running perfectly when I gave it to a friend.
And for two days this week, I took to work a 283-kmi Classic with the engine that's not only original, but with the factory head gaskets.
Neither has a rotted-away body, either.

Every brand has some examples like that, but for it it be consistent, that is a whole 'nother story. You know its not the norm. Anyway, my point to the original point was not to try and justify an $80k purchase with a 300k lifespan that may or may not happen. A new Defender, at 53k might do that, too, but nobody realistically expects it to when they buy it to justify the price. Even Toyota seems to be crapping the bed with the new Turbo V6/Hybid motors so that promise is gone in the Land Cruiser until proven otherwise.

Have seen more reports of the 5.7 in the 200 series and Tundras breaking valve springs. It’s not all roses with Toyotas

Oh interesting. I know all those 2UR or whatever motors have some cooling leak issue in the valley but that sounds like more of a problem.

The 4.6 is solid but also has coolant leaks in the valley (not dissimilar to a 5.0/SCV6) and of course has the timing chain which requires servicing. Similar coolant leak in the 5.7. The factory radiators in the 200’s are lucky to last much over 100k miles. Seems these problems a Land Rover would be lambasted for is simply ‘maintenance’ for a Toyota…

It's the 2023 update to the old mindset of "I'd rather push a Toyota than drive a Land Rover."

It was a very nice drive. We did one full loop on the Motocross circuit at Potomac Speedway, so a few steep and blind up/down’s, off-cambers, side trails, but nothing that challenged the capability. Overall, if felt remarkably like a 90’s coil sprung Rover (our ‘96 Disco in particular). These were prototype vehicles and not street legal for public roads. The look and feel was deja vu.

Overall fit and finish seemed well built. Yes, it is a ‘23/‘24 MY, so it’s going to be modern, no way around that. But I feel it is the only purpose-built vehicle in the market. Our mandatory professional copilot was with Overland Experts, and we had a great conversation during and after the drive. He pointed out the Grenadier technical expert which led to an in-depth and priceless conversation.

This trip was well worth the 4-hour drive, which we tagged on to a family weekend visit. I’ve had my deposit in for well over a year, and with my new specification insights I just need to wait for May’s pricing release. There was an unconfirmed statement that a true base-model may join the line up. Time will tell…

We are all waiting the May 11th price release! At least last I heard it was May 11th.

The one major hangup for me is the silly center console ipad replacing a standard instrument binnacle over the steering wheel. I don't think I'd ever be able to get used to that and consider it acceptable.

Especially odd for a function-over-form vehicle. It's forgivable though as the first product of a new company, but I expect the next generation to correct it.

I never thought I would adjust to a digital speedo, but I did. My 109 has a speedo in the center of the dash and I never thought twice about it.

Aside from pricing, I'm interested to see how the Fieldmaster and Trailmaster packages finalize for the NA market, and if they add a true base model. I liked the A la carte build idea. I don't want sun roofs or the raised air intake, and each package has one of them.

Stock are 32”, 265/70R17. My co-driver said 33's fit without mods, so 255/80R17. Someone also posted on G&R that the Grenadier South African Tour had a truck on 35’s.
