I've been watching VS on Saturday morning to catch the bird hunting shows in anticipation of the impending season. I've been repeatedly subjected to this commercial for Mobil 1 featuring the Drive Around the World in Disco 2s.

"41,000 miles on 1 oil change"

That's a pretty lofty claim.

Because it's bullshit.

It you have a Disco2, think about how much oil it leaks under normal use. Now think about running it hard and hot for an extended period of time. That sucker is going to leak a quart of engine oil every 3,000 miles minimum. I have to assume they didn't let the engines run dry and topped them up with oil as needed. That's 14 more quarts of oil, or the equivalent of two more oil changes. The only thing impressive about that would be if they used the same oil filter. They put Mobil 1 products in the transmission, tcase and diffs as well. At least the tcase and diffs leaked as well. If they topped those up as well, that's the equivalent of more changes.

What a crock.

This is why I dont worry about minor oil leaks. I just keep topping it off every few weeks. I probably should change it more often but between constantly adding new oil and a industrial magnet on the bottom of the oil pan to catch the heavy ends I do pretty good extending my oil changes.

Also I wouldn't brag about only doing one oil change in 41k miles. If they could just make the trip in a Land Rover without any major failures they are doing pretty good.

Also, it doesn't tell anything about how much crud is left in that poor engine that gets its equivalent of full oil change every 10-12 k miles or so...

Leak a quart every 3000 miles? Thats quite an exageration Jack.

My D2 has never needed to be topped off, for that matter neither has my series.

You sure you got oil in there? I had a 2002 VW Eurovan, VW claimed it was "normal" to have to add 1 quart every 3k miles. I expect it from a Rover but not VW. My 1969 2a leaked less than my Defender and my Disco but it still leaked.

X2 bro-ha. I've never topped off the D2, but I have topped off the IIa maybe once or twice.

Just like my vw bug, "continously changing oil". Just top it off once a week when you fill up.

"Normal" per Porsche factory for a new mid-eighties Carrera 3.2 was 1.6 quarts per 620 miles. Luckily (IIRC) the oil tank holds 12+ quarts.

Greg,

Fortunately I checked the oil after a trip to Tahoe and found it to be almost two quarts low. I can imagine there are plenty of owners who dont even think about checking the oil, by then it may be too late. I have a Honda Pilot now and it doesnt take any oil. It's nice to have a car that I can just jump in and go. But part of the appeal of the Defender for me is the constant tinkering, the pre trip checks and the smell of gear oil:D

A quart of oil every 3 to 5K and spin on a new filter... A quickie Oil Change... When I go on long dusty trips I do the same... Well not 41k trips but 2 to 3 k
