Well, I needed an oil change today for a trip. Bad planning prevented me from ordering the stuff ahead of time (and I ain't using my reserve), so I searched around town and found the last case of Amsoil left. It was the 5W40 European spec. After a quick chat with the people at Cape Fear, just to be on the safe side, I bought it.

The Disco is now running on the stuff, and seems to be doing so quite nicely. We will see how it turns out.

Cheers,

Kennith

My next oil change will be Castrol 0w-30. Make sure it says "Made in Germany" on the back. Pep boys and Advance has it, but its $7/quart. My local Walmart (2 of them) do not carry ANY ACEA A3/B3/B4 oils. I did a search on the Castrol UK site for a Discovery 94-99 and they recommend 0W-30 synthetic. This oil also gets very good reviews on the interwebs.

So from reading all this mind numbing info i gather that if i use a 15W40 during the summer and Mobile 1 High Mileage 10w30 during the winter this MAY be the best way to go?

Oddly enough i have a 55 gallon drum of 15W40, too bad its for my M1A1's.......

That woudl work, but why not the same oil year round? If its a3/b3 rated, why not?

Tanks are cool! :)

Sure, you can do that. What do you use in winter? Why not year round?

Does it? I dotn recall off the top of my head. If the spec sheet shows that, then it woudl be suitable.

Do you know where to find the HTHS ratings for Rotella products? The product sheet for 5w40 on Rotella's website doesn't list the rating. I thought I remembered someone posting in the other oil thread, a comment from the Rotella forum stating the HTHS was 4.2. I didnt know if there was some industry data you had access to? Just curious.

Here is the technical sheet for Rotella 5w40.

Not on that oil. I cant remember off the top of my head the HTHS on it.

No spec listed on HTHS, you COULD look at the manufacture specs meet and see what they ask for.

Went back and looked at the Rave CD fluid specs. Says API: SJ and the Rotella 5w40 sheet says SJ...so it appears this will work just fine. I assume that the API SJ formula didnt change since LR spec'd it for its oil.

Chris,

I have a question about the right oil for the Land Rover 200tdi engine.

The manual calls for:

RES.22.OL.PD-2

OR

RES.22.OL.D-5

OR

CCMC PD-2

OR

CCMC D-5

The manual says if the above are not available then use:

MIL-L-2104D

OR

API CD

I'm assuming these would work:

http://www.mobil.com/Canada-English/Lubes/PDS/iocaenpvlmomobil_1_15w-50.pdf

OR

http://www.shellusserver.com/products/rotella_t.php

The mobil is API CF which supplants API CD and the shell is API CI-4 which supplants CD as well.

Are either one of these ok?

Pretty sure someone got the rotella 5w40 tested on the BobisTheoilGuy and the HTHS was near 4.1/4.2. I'm running this oil right now. Next oil change I'm going to the 5w30 castrol EDGE or Royal Purple 15w40. Not sure yet.

The Canadian Mobil 15w50 is a great oil. But more money. The shell has "less" specs but is available everywhere and much cheaper. (at least I think, Chris can Double check)

They both will get the job done. But that specific Mobil 15w50 is top notch. $$$

So, if I go with the Mobil 15w-50 my question is this, is the sulfur content of diesel sold at a regular gas station higher than 0.5%? Mobil 1 15w-50 says it's API CF. According to the link below the sulfur content of the diesel one uses with Mobil 1 15w-50 has to be 0.5% or greater.

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/API.html

Am I reading this correctly?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the sulfur content of most diesel fuels at regular gas stations in the US is at or less than 0.05%. If this is true than I would have to use API CH-4 or API CI-4. So, I need an oil with API CD, CE, CF-4, CI-4 or CH-4 if I'm understanding all of this correctly.

So, I went to get gas for my wife's car and I looked at the diesel pump, which I've never done before because I've never owned a diesel. The pump at the Shell Station said the sulfur content was 15 ppm, which is well below 0.5%.

CCMC was replace by ACEA A few years ago..96 I think. Mil spec is still valid, but hard to get info on.

Euro engines I always default to a ACEA rated oil, like the first one. The "B" means suitable for diesel engines, and with a turbo and a euro engine engine, I woudl look to something with a ACEA B3 rating.

The ROtella night me just fine, but with a b3 rating, then we know it is.
