Toyota third/axle converts check-in

detroit rear, or heck get a cheap lunchbox locker.

fwiw, the e-locker is fine. but if you do elocker, you cannot swap the carrier for any other locker. i think you can do some sort of LSD hybrid using a supra diff, but not certain..........

edit, the only reused mounting on my axle swap is the front panhard mounts on both axle and frame. lined up perfect for a d2.
oh and spring perches on the frame.

I did use off the shelf toyota length tie rod and drag links as well as modifying the pitman arm to fit a toyota tre.

was it worth it? absolutely. I would 4 link the rear next time instead of the a-arm i made.... this is why: toy mini on right, fzj80 on left
birfield_sizes.jpg

Put a tape measure across those, I'd like to see what the dimensions are.

Why did you use rear stub axles? Was there a reason?

what are you talking about? I assume you are using the queens english and mean the spindles. Why would I leave them out?

I think he means why are you using rear spindles on the front?
It was confusing at first when I looked because the rear spindles are posed next to the swivels.

front spindles go on the front, rear spindles go on the rear. Both have to be bored out to 1.290

Maybe it's an optical illusion but those 4x w holes look they are not clocked properly compared to the other other holes.

they arent square IIRC. more a H pattern.

PT, i didnt take that pic, so ill have to search for the dimensions. it is very noticably bigger compared to a LR CV though.

It's not on the print, but the axis for the rectangular pattern were drilled approx 45 degrees off the axis for the existing square pattern. The model was drawn at 45 degrees.

f'yeah!!!! Tonight I wrapped up a 2 month long 5" lift/35"tire/rovingtracks toys/ARB lockers/t woods driveshafts/TF 6 degree radius arms. 90 MPH and it felt great.

This vehicle is amazing. I was halfway expecting something that would drive like dog shit for the rest of its life, it is at least as good as it was before when it had OME HD + 1" spacers and 235s.

Thanks Keith. He took care of me when the spindle to CV clearance didn't work out the first time. For those who may be doing this swap, I recommend doing it this way rather than Keith's...
