Dan will enjoy this- that's my 04. One of the Optimas was having a problem keeping a charge, but had not given any indication of reversing a cell or anything potentially dangerous other than being kinda weak. The corner of the battery that came apart and appears by all opinions so far to be the cause is under the negative terminal of the aux battery. Truck sat 18 hours since the last time it was driven- lit up Sunday morning on its own.

I thought you gave up on Optima a long time ago Steve. That sucks big time!

I've had problems all along with the Optimas- every other truck I had them in had problems with them and the one weak one I had I was trying to ignore until spring. So much for that idea. Truck is waiting more investigation, but I might be shopping for a new one soon- it might not be cost effective to fix. In that case, I strip the RTE stuff etc and let 'er go. Worst part is that my wife is sad about it-

HA, we just thought the back of your pants were muddy ;)

Well , that sucks Steve. I am more unimpressed with Optima all the time...

FWIW- good eye on the photo- they were blue tops. I'll get more pics when I clean the 20lbs of dry chem off etc.

This suck big time ! Makes me think i better get my truck appraised with all the $ i put in it i wonder how much the assurance compagnie would give me for a 96 D1? i have more mods than the trucks worth !

They'll let you take off the mods- they'd rather not pay for them. Of course that's only if the mods don't burn up. I'm thinking my next one will be done differently- but having two batteries rocks. Leave the fridge on etc and never worry that it won't start.

No hint at all of any problem. Once a month or so I take the truck into the shop and spend an evening going through everything and checking everything, including the winch wiring, battery terminals and grounds etc. We drove the truck about 60 miles or so at least the day before, parked it for the day- and the next morning about 11AM it lit up. I don't know exactly how long it was lit before my wife saw it, but the insulation was still on fire when I got to it with a 20lb bottle from the house. Needless to say, I am pretty sad- that truck was like part of the family and has some awesome memories attached. If it can't be fixed, I think I'll concentrate on my 109SW for awhile.

I mentioned it in a thread about timing belts on another forum to make the guy that lost the engine in a Freebie feel better.. Hadn't said much otherwise since it's still up in the air what will happen with the truck. Personally, I'd like to fix it. If possible, maybe I'll buy it back if they total it and part it out- it was in phenominal shape and although the pic looks bad, I think it can be fixed fairly easily. The main harness is fine under the melted outer covering, the engine harness, fuse box, coolant bottle are gone- as is the radiator, but I think I could fix it easily with used parts if I bought it back. To do it with new parts would be expensive, so we're not sure where it stands with the insurance company. ::big sigh::
That 4.6 and those axles/brakes would be nice on my 109. :)

Exide.
They've been making storage batteries since the late 1800's so they have a bit of experience.

Oddessy looks very likely a good choice but I have no personal experience with that brand.

what about putting in a fuse in beetween the batterie and power source or something so the fuse blows instead of the batterie ? does that make any sense ?

If you can find a 4 or 500 amp fuse. Most electric winches draw around that much at stall.

You can get a 500 amp circuit breaker. That would help if a cable shorted out- but I doubt that was the problem on my truck. If a battery internally shorts, it doesn't need to be connected to anything to cause it to light off.

Does that go for any batterie you think. I mean internal short.

Any battery can get an internal short. Some construction methods will protect against it better then others.

Steve, no, I seriously doubt circut protection would have helped.
