One of the Optimas was having a problem keeping a charge, but had not given any indication of reversing a cell or anything potentially dangerous other than being kinda weak. The corner of the battery that came apart and appears by all opinions so far to be the cause is under the negative terminal of the aux battery. Truck sat 18 hours since the last time it was driven- lit up Sunday morning on its own.

syoung said:FWIW- good eye on the photo- they were blue tops. I'll get more pics when I clean the 20lbs of dry chem off etc.

syoung said:No hint at all of any problem. Once a month or so I take the truck into the shop and spend an evening going through everything and checking everything, including the winch wiring, battery terminals and grounds etc. We drove the truck about 60 miles or so at least the day before, parked it for the day- and the next morning about 11AM it lit up. I don't know exactly how long it was lit before my wife saw it, but the insulation was still on fire when I got to it with a 20lb bottle from the house. Needless to say, I am pretty sad- that truck was like part of the family and has some awesome memories attached. If it can't be fixed, I think I'll concentrate on my 109SW for awhile.
If you can find a 4 or 500 amp fuse. Most electric winches draw around that much at stall.MontrealRR90 said:what about putting in a fuse in beetween the batterie and power source or something so the fuse blows instead of the batterie ? does that make any sense ?
syoung said:You can get a 500 amp circuit breaker. That would help if a cable shorted out- but I doubt that was the problem on my truck. If a battery internally shorts, it doesn't need to be connected to anything to cause it to light off.
