I hope to never be in such a situation. I'd prefer to not let anyone meaning me harm to get that close, either by retreating (yes, I'll run to avoid being shot or shooting someone).
Packing heat is for the situation you can't get out of, can't back out of, can't talk out of, and is a last ditch effort.
I don't want to advertise I'm packing and don't like to carry on me any more. A purse/holster is plenty close enough for me. In my line of work, it's good enough. Now, when I drove a cab, that was another story.
