If it is anything like a disco, put t-case in neutral, tranny in park, and key in unlocked position. I pulled my 98 across the country on a dolly with my 96 with this procedure, and had zero issues. The guy on this board who told me this method has pulled his disco behind his rv for years.

Move to Denver or Boulder, CO, every other vehicle is a Disco or RR, with lots of Defenders and Series trucks around too. My two discos are stock, but there are lots with tasteful mods.

Sounds like a worn bushing or tie rod end. Have someone shake the vehicle back and forth, and/or try to manually turn the steering wheel whilst you are under the vehicle (not on a jack or jackstands, on all 4 wheels and on the ground). You should be able to isolate the noise/issue that way...

That is more than I can afford to play with, on top of the vehicle price to begin with. Back to the proverbial drawing board. I may just snag the defender, but will have to wait to see if a few things come together first. Thanks for your help.

I may be interested in a trade, not a p38 though, my 100% stock (still has 5 xd michellins) 96 SD with 85k, white on tan cloth, no sunroofs. Power steering leaks a bit, but gets 18 mpg highway. pm if interested.
