which would you pick awd car?

The '92 Subaru Turbo is a 2.2L, they are getting very rare because the engines are bullet-proof and people buy them just to get the motor. It is under-powered for a turbo motor but very dependable (only 9psi boost). The rest of the vehicle is very simple and easy to work on. The '92 AT is a...

Have my neighbor problems gone away?

I hope you can account for your whereabouts. Might be a good idea to keep in the company of several others until everything settles down. Just in case the authorities ask.

    Job Location

I live in No CA. I'm 2 hrs from the ocean and San Francisco, an hour from sking or playing in Lake Tahoe. The politics suck and the taxes are nothing to brag about. The weather is great and they have not yet outlawed guns or wild women. I love it here. If you get away from the SF Bay area cost...

    Severe steering shake during braking

When you removed your old rotors, did you thoroughly clean the hubs? Often dirt or corrosian will build up and fall onto the mounting surface, causing the new rotor to not sit flush. It only takes a few thousands of contamination to give the rotors excessive runout.

    Coolant overflowing

Let's think positive, have you replaced your Pressure Cap? Have you tested the cap or the Cooling System? When the engine is running you have fans to keep the temp under control and the pressure down. When you shut the engine off, the fans stop cooling and Heat-soak causes the pressure to go up...

    Overhead Gun Rack

I used one in my full-size Bronco. When I installed it I put two strips of sheetmetal about 2" wide on the top side of the headliner. I did not want to depend on the headliner to support the wait of my rifles. It worked well. I would avoid screwing through the metal of the roof. You might be...

    Still troubleshooting

Fuel pressure should stay within a few psi all the time. There are a lot of posts about poor quality in rebuilt alternators. You should have 14.2V +/- with the engine running, 12.6V at the battery with engine off and no loads. The old standby cause for intermittant problems is an electrical ground.

its got to be a stick valve right?

You can do a Leak-down test to determine where the compression loss is. You can probably rent the gauge needed. It basically applies compressed air to the cylinder when the valves are in the closed/overlap position. With compression that low (60psi) it will be obvious where the leak is - into...

    Hunting Cabins

I am fortunate to be part owner (with 3 cousins) of a cabin built by my grandfather in 1927. It is located on a Forest Service lease in the Sierra Nevada. At the time it was built it was really out in the boondocks and was a refuge from the summer heat in the city. Advice if I was to do it from...

    Torque wrench

A 3/8" up to 100FtLbs will handle everything for the engine (except for the dampner). The biggest problem on aluminum engines is stripping bolts so I like a 3/8". If you want to torque the suspension parts I would get a 1/2" up to 250FtLbs. Most people just run the suspension down with an...

DII VIN Says V-6, But it is a V-8

Actually, your VIN indicates an inline 6cyl, from all the decoders I have looked at. The "P" in the middle being the engine designator. Is it possible you have misread the number or it was damaged somehow so that it looks differant? Did you check the number in more than one place on the vehicle...

DII VIN Says V-6, But it is a V-8

VIN = Vehicle Identification Number. In the USA we don't worry about the engine designation because they were only available with the V8. The only alternative was a diesel Td5. I think either you are misreading the VIN or your VIN interpeter is wrong as the V-6 was introduced with the Freelander...

    Replica law...

Think in terms of a known repilca car - Ford Shelby Cobra, built with a fiberglass body and a Jaguar rear end. The law will allow it to be registered as a 1967 Shelby Cobra Replica even though it has a differant body and suspension. Those cars had serial numbers but not VIN. Probably a result of...

    AAA Memberships

I seriously considered joining AAA, even looked up the cost ($109), because I don't want to get stranded or pay my own tow bill. Then I looked at my Auto insurance, turns out it covers as well as AAA. 24 hour Roadside assistance.

Transmission doesn't engage for a while

The good news is that it could be an out-of-adjustment Inhibitor Switch. The bad news is that it could also be a pressure loss in the A-clutch circuit. It is not easy to find diagnostic info for these transmissions. If you had the specs you could take pressure readings and determine the fault...

    D2 Aux Light Switch STC50098

If you are looking for the switch for the auxiliary front lights (fog or safari) be careful. I went through this on my 2004 Disco and there are 5 kits offered that year. The differance between the switches is the alignment slots for the connector. STC50098 is available from LRNA, $39.84 list...
